Our band keyboard player/PA system owner put the whole system (speakers/amps/lights/snake/trailer) up for sale on Craigslist maybe a week ago. He bought the MyMix things and we are hoping to be able to us those with a few other pieces of outboard gear as our PA from now on. Along with the system being way too big for most clubs the trailer he bought to haul it did not fit in his garage (the third stall is a bit smaller and the trailer is about 3 inches too tall to fit in) and his subdivision covenants do not allow trailers to be kept in the area for more than two or three days.

We figured a long process of selling it and probably piecing out parts of it. But no - the whole thing sold in less than a week intact.

So while I am happy that I do not have to load/unload/setup/teardown that massive sucker - I have a new dilemma.

In order to use the new system we need to take a feed off of our personal myMix box (see this thread thread link) we need to provide either a powered monitor or a wireless in ear monitor system that runs from a 1/4 feed out of the back of each unit. We have a gig in just under three weeks and I have to have the monitor by then. Being that money is tight (though I should be getting about $230.00 or so in gig money in the next 6 weeks) I'll have to slap the sucker on a card for the time being. The minimum I have seen for a decent powered monitor that is not a Behringer is about $250.00 and most are $300.00 and up. Wireless in ear monitors (what I really want to get) start at about $400.00 for decent ones. If anyone has a line on a good product or a place that has great prices - let me know. I'm watching eBay and Craigslist but not much is on either right now that is not new and at the standard sale price.

On top of that I am seriously reevaluating me being in the band. I have little passion or love for a lot of the music we are playing (modern country) and a lot of the input I have suggested to the band (songs/taking 1 or 2 guitar solos per night) has been ignored. But I also have to weight that against the problem of not being in a band and trying to find one that fits - which can be equally as bad (see Fanuvbrak).

Only thing I can suggest is, just like a job, never quit until you have the next one lined up. So if you get to the point that you're seriously considering quitting, stay with it while you find your new band.

Either that or say "Hey guys, this isn't working for me anymore. I'm seriously thinking of quitting but if you want to keep me some things need to change..."

Either way, good luck. And I know nothing about in-ear or out-of-ear monitors. :shrug:

We had the big ass PA when I played in my previous band. It was a pain in the ass. Half the places we went into popped the circuit breakers as soon as we powered it up. Complete overkill and it took two people just to move it. I don't miss that. I don't miss my old band either.

Playing a single acoustic act with a singer has been way better for my - but that is me. Some people have to have the full band experience.

I also understand the music thing. If I have to play Joker one more time I'm going to shoot somebody! But technically - you get hired back by selling more beer. I hated half the songs we played.

I thought about joining another band - but then scrapped that idea. I'm pretty confident that all bands have drama and working scheduled that conflicts and political dooshbaggery. I don't miss that at all.
 
So you basically just need headphones, right? Earbuds will get you through a gig or two if you don't know how long you want to stick around.

Well - as a front line player I really don't want headphones on and would need a really long chord anyways. I may end up going that route though....
 
I just looked to see if I could get you a deal on an in-ear system and they can be pretty expensive. Kind of a lot to ask everyone to invest for a band that isn't bringing in a ton of cash every month in the first place.

Roll of Duct Tape = $2
Duct tape baby monitor to PA stack
Duct tape parent's monitor to side of your head
repeat for each band member

Dave, I have a wireless in ear system I'll hook you up with on the cheap. It's basically brand new. I put it in my pa rack, tried it once then pulled it. It's carvin and works well. I just really don't need it. I wish I knew, I could have brought it this past weekend. I'll take a pic in a bit.
 
on another note, the behringer b212 powered monitors work really well. Especially for 250 bucks. We use them as monitors every weekend and can't kill them, they cut through nicely, and they are easy to haul.
 
Here's the wireless in ear. Carvin PM1000. The channel is selectable so as not to interfere with other folks in the band and their wireless IE. The buds aren't the best, but they sound good. They have fresh foam on them, no grody ear wax or anything like that. :grin: Let me know if you're interested. My plan was to use them instead of earplugs so I could mix in a little of what I needed.

The reviews on the PM1000 are pretty mixed - mainly saying that there is too much white noise. I think I'm going to try the powered monitor first....


BTW - I have been trying to convince our PA owner of the wonders of powered speakers for awhile now - he had a whole argument of many reasons not to buy them. So what did he just buy? A brand new powered speaker system from QSC (two powered mains, two powered subs).

I read that too before I bought it. I havent noticed any, but then again my ears have a little white noise built in :) If you upgrade the buds somewhere down the line, the system is first rate. I paid $200 or $225 bucks for it brand new (dont remember offhand), I'm thinking $140 paypal, includes UPS shipping. Trades accepted and preferred though.
