Food Jam: Back In Houston and tried a Whataburger

Well I am back in Houston for a couple of more days again and had a chance to try a Whataburger - Not bad. It reminds me alot of the 5 Guys burger except larger - not bad of a meal for $6.29. Had a double cheese burger with grilled onions, fries and unsweetened iced tea. I still prefer In-and-Out more as well as Fatburger - just different taste I guess. I had mine for lunch enroute from Hobby airport to the hotel in Stafford. Anyway, I couldn't finish it.

Dude, there are so many places to get a better burger! Beck's Prime off of Westheimer, for instance.
I used to eat at the Whataburger in the downtown tunnels, but not too often.

Had to try as I heard people speak about it - either way I tried it. Tonight it will either be the Texas Land and Cattle which I like or I might give Saltgrass a try - will be here for two nights anyway.

The "trick" to Whataburger is that the menu usually doesn't list any of the available customization options -- grilled onions instead of raw, Texas Toast instead of buns, jalapenos, etc. Right now they're featuring a green chile double burger, but you can get those green chiles on anything else if you ask for it. My only grief with Whataburger is that they use iceberg lettuce, which is my least favorite kind.

I went to Beck's Prime once and got the worst steak sandwich -- bar none -- I've ever had in my life, and vowed never to go back. Sorry Tig.

In related news, I just found out that they are putting in a new Five Guys down the street from me. I r exciteded.

They're all over out here. My wife grew up on them, so they're her favorite. I haven't tried Five Guys yet, but they're out here too.
I think Lenny's is one of the better ones here though. The kind of place where they wrap the burgers in thin yellow paper so the juice soaks through and runs down your arm, and when you order fries they come in a brown bag with the oil stains already showing. Now thems is sum fries.

In the Staples Shopping center where Boot World used to be... Across from the new El Pollo Loco they are building and the newly opened "Mikes BBQ".

That shopping center is quickly making an awesome comeback!

And it's so close to my house, I could walk there in minutes if I wanted

Dude, thats great news! I don't normally have much time for lunch, so i have been only able to scoot to San Marcos a couple times.

Now you tell me -

I did get the grilled onions but Texas Toast would have probably been the winner. Not much into Jalapenos now that I am older.

It's been several years, so no telling. I've seen too many once good restaurants drop their quality, so no surprise.

Saltgrass is OK, not super great. Ruth Chris Steak House might be better.

Also, Christie's Seafood and Steakhouse on Westheimer at Greenridge (just West of the Galleria) has some great dishes. It is an old Greek family restaurant.

For excellent Italian, go to the original Carrabba's on Kirby.

If you have time, go visit Rockin' Robin Guitars for some great gear and a museum of cool signed guitars at the top of the walls.

That's a drag as I could have gone yesterday when the time was available. Plus I was in Bellaire yesterday too which on the map shows that it is really close to that place. I know I won't be able to make it as our day is from 8-5 and who knows what is to come later. Thanks for the tip on the other eatery's.

It's definitely better, but it costs about twice as much, too.

It's not a bad shop. I always found those guys to be pricks, though. Fuller's Vintage Guitar on the North Loop was always a way better experience IMO.

If you want a good burger around there, Broiler Burger is a great family-owned shop. I hope they're still around.

Their steak sandwich is total shit. Their burgers, OTOH, are pretty good. You pay for them, though, IIRC. Not a cheap burger.

Fuller's has definitely climbed to the top of the heap -- much bigger store, wider variety of stuff.

Yep, amazingly enough, in a city where everything gets either torn down or run down to point of becoming a taqueria, they've managed to survive. I can remember going there when I was a kid growing up in Bellaire, before my family moved farther out west.

Anyhow... all this talk about burgers today, and I was stuck at the office eating soup.

I remember the store when it was in Webster on Hwy 3 back around 1978 or so, that had a Hendrix owned Strat in a display case up on the wall. I have no idea what ever happened to it.
