Another Rediscovered Classic

While considering what song to record for the VOM1T, I found myself considering the songs of Donovan. Catch the Wind is the song that got me started. I considered that one, but it is too common. I began to think of songs of Donovan's that I performed in the past and began considering Sunshine Superman, but I have never worked out a good arrangement of that. That made me think of the Sunshine Superman album, however, and I realized how perfect that disc is. The title track made his pop career, but it also has Season of the Witch and Fat Angel, songs that have been covered by many other artists. Perhaps my favorite song on the whole disc, however, is Ferris Wheel.

Now I have downloaded the album and am again reveling in the magic of that recording.

Speaking of Catch the Wind, here is Donovan's performance of that song at the Secret Policeman's Other Ball. That guitar makes me think of my Blue Luna.
 
Saw this thread earlier, so I spent part of the afternoon trying to work up a satisfying solo arrangement of "Sunshine Superman." Not quite there, but it's better than the last time I tried it.

For a guy known mostly for his hit singles, Donovan had a lot of great album tracks.

In many cases, the album tracks are much better, but that could be due to the fact that the hit tracks got overplayed. I could listen to the Mellow Yellow album all day as long as I skip the title track.
 
Donovan was on Howard Stern a couple months back. He gave Howard one of his signature guitars. If you haven't heard it, it's well worth listening to.
 
It is funny that, after playing a couple of custom guitars in the past 20-30 years Gibson makes the Donovan signature and he is now playing that.
 
I wouldn't want one, to be honest. As much as I like Donovan, I won't be any more like him with a signature model. My guitars suit me, and I'll stick with them.
