I need a new roof, as well... However, since I have a 12 and 12 pitched roof, even though I know how to do it, and have done plenty of roofing, I am going to hire someone else to do it... Of course, I say that now, but then I think about the fact that I already have a coil roofing nail gun, and the tight wad in me thinks otherwise... Then I come back to my senses, and remind myself of how dangerous a 12 and 12 roof is...

Wouldn't wait till summer, if you can help it. Helped a friend with his grandparents roof one summer. . . even in Idaho it was hot as balls working on the roof.
Yep, and if it's a comp roof, you can't even walk on it in the heat, or it smears...

I no longer need to worry about my roof shingles either...but I don't have a metal roof.

No hammers, no nails, no back-breaking do it myself, no noisey crew and 3 day job while never knowing if I am getting ripped off or not. Just paint it on with a roller. Now, it isn't just ordinary paint...I used $2000 worth of product but it was easy to apply and the benefits are excellent - including the light colour that I picked being very reflective of the sun and therefor causing a huge decrease in the thermal heating that takes place in the attic which has a major effect on my air conditioning costs.

I was apprehensive because none of the major building supply places carry the product but I had got them to send me the free sample that they advertise and I put it on a shingle. I suppose it was a bit of a leap of faith so to speak because the product is somewhat expensive for an 'unknown' but I went with it and decided that I'd be a bit of an experiment.
No, I don't normally do $2000 experiments!!
My shingles had lost much of their 'pebble' and many were turning up at the edges (caused from overheating - typical of not enough attic ventilation). I dreaded the thought of getting a roofing company due to the potential rip off factor and I thought about doing it myself because I have always been able to count on my body for enormous amounts of work...but the number of bundles that I would have had to carry up the ladder and pound all of those nails-that's AFTER the process of ripping the old shingles off!! Anyway, roofing company would have probably been $4000 or more, do it myself with new shingles would have been way over my head and my back would have broken. That sealed it.
This winter has been a peach relatively speaking, but last winter was the first winter for the treated roof and I didn't lose any shingles despite much windier conditions than the previous winter in which I lost perhaps 10+/-.

Yeah, I've put on many a shingled roof in my day, but when our house needed it, I went out and looked at the pitch and height and said "No f'n way".
Luckily, we had full roof replacement on our homeowner's insurance and while our shingles were in pretty bad shape to begin with, we got a strong wind and hail storm that did enough damage that the insurance company paid for it.
We actually ended up with about $1500 leftover.
We'll see next month how much our premium goes up.

There is certainly not much that compares with the beauty of the metal roof - that's for sure. The clay and slate look good too but may not have some of the advantages of the metal roof.
The other pictures at the link that I posted are my photos too so you can clearly see that it is just plain old shingles that are coated. The shot of my house almost gives the look that it is completely flat on the surface because of the bright sunlight that day.
