Advice needed

hobo

simple guitar player
I've been writing songs for quite some time now and my gut feeling is "Why don't see if you can do something commercial with them". My question is, "How should I approach this venture in a professional way?" Also I'd want other people to record my songs. I don't have any music business experience so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Insert Hunter S. Thompson quote (originally written about TV but coopted by pretty much every field including music) here...

The song 'Here I Go Again' by Whitesnake had the original lyrics "like a hobo I was born to walk alone". The song tanked.
"Like a drifter I was born to walk alone", boom!
Number one.

If your screen name had been 'drifter' back in 2008, you could be sitting with your soul mate in some hot tub in a mansion right now.

That's my advice

My theory had always been that it originally tanked because the initial version didn’t have Tawny Kitaen dancing on the hood of 2 Jags. But maybe it was the hobo to drifter lyric change.

How do we know they didn't make it big?

Here's some real advice for Mr. Hobo. Stick to your artistic integrity. Who need money right? While I prefer the line with drifter instead of hobo, the original version is so much better.
The Jon Lord organ intro is phenomenal.

*Or put out two versions and have your cake and eat it too. Annoying saying.

OK. I never knew there was another version of this song by the same band and that the actual lyrics were hobo instead of drifter.

Whitesnake has two versions of Crying In The Rain and Fool For Your Loving as well.
The originals are very raw while the newer versions are more polished and over produced. Still good though.

No. The one with the rippin' Adrian Vandenberg solo is the one one I can listen to. When the other (difficult to tell which one you're listening to at first) gets to the "whah wha wuu wuu.. " and limps out after a few seconds I'm like "FUCK THIS STATION!!" :annoyed:

.. and don't' even get me started on the "Extra Keyboards" version. That one can fuck right off!!!!!
