Achtung! A Place for Kerouac

On one hand I love it.

On the other hand, I find $400 hotel rooms an unnecessary expense that kinda flies in the face of the spirit of community they're trying to forward. Seeing that sort of thing leaves me cautious about whether this will have any kind of real impact or just pretentious salad tossing for the current artistic It crowd.

No, no, no.

The hotel and the artist colony are different parts of the same project. She's not going to be charging artists $400/night for use of a chalet. Residencies in those will probably be awarded based on grant applications. Like "I want to record this album, and I think this would be the best place for me to do it, because _______________". The hotel is for tourists who want luxury in a barren, desolate, isolated, yet oddly beautiful setting.

I understand that. This is just where I get to that uncomfortable place in my psyche where art and commercialism blur. Add it to the file of "WTF is wrong with Kerouac?"

To be fair, having a dozen reclusive artists living in a multi-million dollar cluster of chalets isn't going to do much for the local economy. Nor will they be able to subsidize themselves. Community and art are always a back and forth, give and take.

I'd love to start a project like this, some day.

I always thought it would be great to have an arts center for at risk kids in downtown Cincinnati. I taught in an after school program in the area for awhile and you could see what a great impact we were making on a lot of those kids. Unfortunately I have absolutely zero skills in that department, at least when it comes to organizing, fundraising, etc.
