Achtung! a 2 part thread.....let's discuss "stuff" and then 2017

We literally cleaned out our basement last summer which was the accumulation of my parents remaining stuff (after they passed), moving boxes and other boxes and just junk that was acquired by having roommates over the years and my wife and I just got fed up and rented one of those big gondola style dumpsters and another smaller industrial style and had them take it all away when we were done.

It was an astonishing amount of stuff: old bookcases, old furniture that was junk, stuff old roomates abandoned years ago that they or we didn't want. Eleven million old magazines, old paperwork from my parents that was not needed, everything else was put in plastic tubs - cables from my various studios, old computers either sorted in the "trash" or "keep" piles (mostly trash). Old stereo gear, god only knows what else. We were down there a solid week sorting things into the small keep pile and the large trash pile. And another pile of "donate" which was largely old clothes that were too big for us to fit into anymore.

It was a huge sigh of relief to get that stuff out there - you could hold bike races down there now it's so clear of junk. My wife is pretty fastidious anyway but wow, I'm so glad I don't cringe when I walk downstairs anymore. And there's room for my guitar and bass amps now under the stairs.

It sucks, to be honest. We have decks front and back that add living space in the warmer months (we have a big glass dining table on the front deck and laundry / work out equip on back deck) but in winter it is quite cramped. When the boys were young, sharing a 10'x10' was a lot more manageable than once they hit their teens. Every horizontal surface ends up with a lot of things on it. We have very limited closet and storage space, so every time we buy something new, something old has got to go.

I have a small shed outside that holds my tools and crap, but it is packed to the gills and I have to drag half of it out to get to anything, and what usually happens is things get left out and rained on.

My suggestion is to evaluate every single thing you own, and get rid of what is not essential. Find a place for everything once you move, and don't let things get cluttered. I hope you will have a garage, but if not get the biggest shed you can find.

There is an attached 1 car garage. The washer, dryer, and hot water tank are in there. I'm thinking that lining the walls with the old kitchen cabinets will help a lot. I'll also be renting a work space somewhere

Yeah, I was wondering where you were going to find space to build guitars. Hell, the kitchen is only used for a couple hours a day, talk about a waste of space  Clearly, storage is of utmost importance. I wish I had some.
