Waterloo WL-14 Scissortail, Sitka, Maple

This is Collings' latest addition to his inspired line of guitars based on the simple, depression era catalog instruments of the 20s and 30s. The Waterloo WL-14 is the flagship model, and is still by far the most popular instrument in the line. The "Scissortail," named for a bird local to Texas, takes the same L-00 shape and makes a handful of nifty changes to add a new dimension to this beloved model.

This guitar features maple back and sides, a natural Sitka top with X-bracing, tortoise binding (included on the back of the guitar as well) and the same 1 3/4" ebony nut and 2 3/8" string spacing at the saddle. The mahogany neck profile is a pronounced "V" and the guitar is expertly finished in a thin satin nitrocellulose lacquer.

The sound is dry and direct, with a bit more bite than its mahogany cousin. The fretwork and playability are impeccable. It's a delightful instrument!

Looks nice, and probably sounds great. It loses me at the pronounced V neck, though.
 
Seems like a really nice guitar which, to me, has a cheap aesthetic.

I think it's the head stock logo or maybe the pick guard, but my first thought is "cheap student guitar".
I know it's not, but well, here we are..

Edit: Heck, it might even just be the lighting of the photos.

Really don't dig the pickguard, but that's something you could tolerate with time.
And I don't play acoustic enough to pay that much for one. :embarrassed:
 
I love the maple, hate the pickguard and dislike the missing sound hole rosette.
Also, their stencil logo on the headstock looks like something from a old Harmony.
 
I love the look of an old, cheap guitar, but don't want it to come with a luxury price tag. I'm sure the sound is great, but I'll stick to a cheap reproduction of a cheap old guitar...
 
Waterloos are great guitars, but I do get the point that they are making high end guitar versions of older cheap models. A interesting concept.

That is a beautiful acoustic, but I am not a fan of maple guitars in general.
 
I like the maple back and the bird on a barbed wire.
The pickguard looks like StewMac Torteloid, and not the style I would choose.

As a part of the echo generation of the Folk Boom, I had to play on actual cheap, awful guitars when I was starting out, because that's what my uncle left in our crawl space. So I see a guitar like that and cringe. But if I've only seen them in archival footage of Lightning Hopkins and Cisco Houston, maybe I'd want that look with high end appointments.
