Gig Report: 5 piece rehearsal edition

OGG

Master of the Meh
Finally had a real rehearsal as a 5 piece last night. It was good, and it was not so good. The keyboard player didn't really do his homework, which is very disappointing. Despite several weeks to prepare just 5 fairly simple songs, he really only knew 2 of them well enough. "One thing leads to another" and "Overkill" were two that he really nailed and they sounded great. "Love my way" was close, but not 100%. "Don't Change" and "We can get together" were not so great, in fact, the later had some trainwreck moments. Again, with the prep time he was given, I expected a LOT better.

2nd guitar guy did well, and it was hard for me to hand over the reigns entirely on "I ran" and the solo to "Overkill" since I am so used to playing them now and I think I do them better... but, got to be equitable, so they are his babies now.

"I melt with you" turned out really well, "Million miles away" and "I got you" need some work, but were passable. We did a pretty decent job with "I will follow" too.

Overall, I was left feeling pretty "meh", but that is all about the keyboard guy. He mentioned that he just stared 2 new classes at the local juco, and considering that his schedule already looked like it would be a problem, I just don't see it working out. He gets next Saturday as a make or break rehearsal.

On a fun note, I played through the drummers Princeton 65w 112, and was impressed by how much clean headroom that little thing had. Classic Fender clean tones and a ton of volume. Not a bad little amp at all.

Face it, this was really your first rehearsal as a band. Sounds like you may have to rehash it again, but try to highlight the positives.

Yeah, I think you're pushing too hard. Have a bit more fun with it and don't be neurotic. It's good to work on stuff and have goals. But ultimately, you've got to get comfortable with each other. The music will fall into place.

Yeah.... As much as you want the band to rock right off the bat it sounds like thing went ok for the most part. If this were a more "pro" situation then I'd have problems with it but no one is making their mortgage payment off the gig.

You guys are all right. Trying not to be too critical, the keys guy just made it feel like 1 step forward 2 steps back. The added element was fantastic when it worked, but chaotic when it didn't. We will see what next Saturday brings.

Oh crap! Next Saturday... I just remembered that is the big event at Mark's place. Dammit. I really want to head up there and have been looking forward to it. Hmmm, not sure if I can do both. Damn.

Well, I'll see what I can do.

Guitar guy's AXE FX II is a beast, I really like it, but it looks like a bastard to lug around. Not sure I would use one just for rehearsals, but if he's ok with it, cool.

He has a really pretty '83 Strat (dark red metallic, from Japan) that sounds great, but I swear it goes WAY out of tune, way too often. Seems like he is constantly chasing it. I told him he might want to have it checked out because it is so dramatic. Probably a nut issue, but he doesn't mess with that kind of stuff. He also has a white '62RI that sits in the case all night. Weird. It's funny, because I restrung and intonated both of my main guitars yesterday afternoon and locked them down before I left the house and never had to make but a tiny adjustment with the fine tuners throughout the night. Reliable gear is so underrated. It's nice when your stuff just works.

actually the "hang" and jam is on Friday night. The setup clinic is Saturday afternoon.

Bass player wants me to go see his former band play in Temecula Friday night so I can see how they do some song mash up things that he wants to try. I like the idea, but not so much the idea of going to the gig. You may have just given me the perfect excuse for not going :-D . Gracias.
