Lately I've really been digging the older "Soviet-Era" guitars coming from Russia, Ukraine, and other countries. Here in the states most of these guitars are still mysteries, and I try to buy these whenever I can. The biggest problem I've encountered is the suspect build quality of these guitars. They are built like tanks, but playability was not a big concern with these old factories. So to get one of these playable is like a HUGE accomplishment! Feels good to hear one of these old guitars play!
So this one is an Aelita, made in Russia. It's a Model 1 simply because it was the first Aelita model. There was also an Aelita 2, and a Stella, and all these guitars ) along with the crazy Tonika guitars were made at the same Russian factory Rostov On Don. The only thing we changed on this guitar was the input jack, which was a DIN plug and now it works with any standard 1/4 cable. The wiring in this guitar is just crazy, with all sorts of preset tone options. There was a part of me that wanted to rewire the whole guitar, but I figured since the original wiring all worked and was untouched, that I'd just leave it alone. There are all sorts of sounds in this guitar, from tinny AM radio to aggressive stacked tones. The neck is straight and without any crazy twists or humps. Frets are all good and for an old Russian guitar this plays VERY well!
The original tremolo arm is gone but you could find retrofit something easily enough. There is also a pull-up mute that you probably don't want to use but it's there if you wanted to add a strip of foam rubber. Condition is pretty good, with the guitar only showing general play wear. Now this guitar will not play like an Les Paul custom, but it does play well. Peeps need to understand that! If you wanted to turn this into a regular gigging guitar then you'd probably need to do some more set-up work. But if you want to pull this off the wall and jam out every now and again then you're all set!
