Went to a minor league baseball game last night.

Thursday is Dollar Night at the stadium. So, since tickets were cheap, my department decided to have a social gathering there. Game started at 7, gates opened at 6. We got there around 6:20. Apparently the bank had made arrangements to have some food and drinks, and a cornhole game in our little tent. We were all setup near third base.

So, I had a couple of free beers, some wings, a hot dog, and threw a game of cornhole (lost 21-8.) :embarrassed:

As for the game, the WV Power were pretty lackluster. We left at around 9. It was the bottom of the 5th inning and we were losing 12-2.

Still, we all had a great time, and even though I'm not a huge baseball fan and our team sucks, I can see the appeal of going to the games. I might even be tempted to go again on Dollar Night some time.

Oh, part of the entertainment between innings was a guy who had made up a rig with 4 Michael Jackson dummies, each dressed to look like different eras of his career. The actual guy was in the middle of the rig, and as he danced, all the dummies moved in unison with him. It was pretty cool, and it really did look like five Michael Jacksons dancing together. It took a pretty close inspection to tell who was real and who was not. Well, except for the guy in the back that looked like he had a broken knee and whose pants fell off 1/2 way into the first number. :embarrassed:

Sounds like a good time. We have a minor league team near where i live, i really need to check it out sometime.

Actually, the Padres are pretty much a minor league team too. :embarrassed:

Minor league ball is great. If you have a team near you, check it out sometime. Some leagues and some cities are better than others but it typically ends up being more than just a baseball game. The dancing Jacksons is pretty classic minor league stuff. The South Atlantic League (Prages team plays in it) has tons of classic old ballparks and great promotional nights. Best of all, it is usually a pretty cheap night out.

cornhole game?

no wonder the bank paid for it.

Basically you take little corn filled bags and toss them 30 feet or so and try to get them into a hole in a wedge shaped platform. You get 3 points for every bag that goes in the hole and 1 point for every bag that stays on the platform.

It's great redneck fun.

There is a minor league team in Colorado Springs, but I have never been to any of their games. Among other things they have a couple of hot tubs along the first base line by a picnic area...

I went to a minor league ballgame in Sacramento once.
It was so boring that I damn near fell asleep.

I think I would have shared that opinion had it not been for the free beer and food and the people I work with being there.

For me, watching baseball is like watching paint dry.

That said, we all seemed to be having fun, and I even found myself watching bits and pieces of the game.

It was definitely a better time than I expected to have, and much, much more entertaining than the couple of other times I've been to minor league games at the old, dillapidated park we had in Charleston prior to 2005.

must be all the cornholing.

i love baseball. i will watch 12 hours of baseball if you let me. and minor league baseball is the best because those guys are really trying to prove themselves out there.

I'm a bigger football fan, but baseball is enjoyable for me as well. Its the only sport that every activity during play is documented.

Tim McCarvers book Baseball for Brain Surgeons and Other Fans will give you a better appreciation for whats going on.

decent book but listening to him has become painful since he went to Fox.

Oh yeah, i know.

But the book was really good about putting things in pretty easy thoughts. You really get a feel for what the catcher has to keep track of throughout the game. I found it very interesting.

he used to not be so bad. i grew up with him and Ralph Kiner broadcasting Mets games.

baseball: the best sleeping pill on the planet. I mean it's worse than watching soccer. :embarrassed:

kids today. no attention span whatsoever. how can you not like soccer?

I have lived for 27 of my 29 years within 15 minutes drive of the football hall of fame. If some isn't getting hit it's boring. :embarrassed:

Actually I really like track and field also but that's because I was a pretty shot put and discus thrower in high school. Also I love basketball because it is so much fun to play and watch. It's constant action. With soccer and baseball it's hours of boredom with seconds of something cool happening that never really make up for all the waiting.
