WTF: Backyard Chickens

While I feel that people have every right to chose what they eat or do not eat I tend to agree with Anthony Bourdain on the behaviors of MOST vegetarians: http://www.goodreads.com/author/quotes/1124.Anthony_Bourdain

Having said that, one of my best friends was a vegetarian for many years. All they served was peperoni pizza? He'd pick the meat off without comment and eat the pizza. Never complained, just did his thing.

To me butchering a chicken is no big deal. I buy them and eggs from the farmer up the road al of the time. I think most folks would be blown away by what a truly fresh chicken tastes like.

I am with you, I normally kill a couple hundred geese a year a 75-100 duck and lived on a farm when I was a kid. I can dress a chicken my way in no time, same with a goose or a duck. We had pigs and would buy half a beef every year. We had chickens for eggs and eating and guinea hens.....weird ass things that they are, but we had 40 acres of land and it was swamp and farm land all around us. I wouldn't have that shit in town, as most cities won't allow it by ordinance. I live far enough out in the country now, but still don't want to deal with that shit. There are enough people that sell farm fresh eggs around for 1.00//dz and tollerate the BS that I don't have to..

Lol, we always have veggies to eat, but these people want veggie lasagna and shit like that.

I try to be mindful that I have special dietary requirements and don't expect folks to meet them. Now, in restaurants and the like, it is different. Then I expect to get reasonable accommodations. :grin:

If I had known they were coming I'd make some accommodation, but showing up unannounced then being all shitty about it pissed me off.

With good reason. That guy was just a jerk. I don't think most veggies are like that (although I have hardly ever met one in real life TBH :grin:)

For most restaurants its just good business sense to have a dish or two that can accomodate the different dietary restrictions people have. A guest popping up unexpected and then being a douche in a private home isn't about being a vegetarian as much as it is about being a douche.

Lol, the best part of the whole deal was this guy says to me "don't you have any vegetarian friends?" To which I replied "do they all act like you?"
That's when he left.

I think the problem there isn't necessarily vegetarians but asshole vegetarians.... Which are identical to plain old assholes

I've got a bunch of restricted diet/vegetarian friends and they all come with food even when I tell them not to or we have them covered with options. None go over another person's house expecting special treatment or act entitled. They are polite and courteous guests.

This, I have very rarely come across anyone with the particular rudeness of Rev's buddy, and I have a lot of friends who are veggies, or just have special dietary needs. They must just save that for you Rev. :grin:

I've only personally, met two vegetarians. My aunt and this guy. He seemed to come from a world where most people are veggies and you need to be prepared for them. If I had lots of vegetarian friends I suppose we would have been prepared, but we don;t so we weren't. :shrug:

I'm also starting to suspect him and my friend where fucking with me for their own amusement. Thinking of some of the stuff we have pulled on each other through the years this could be the case.

You guys know me. I don't think I'm rude or hard to get alone with. :shrug:

It's the brewing-my-own-beer of the aughts. Seeing as laying hens are generally "destroyed" anyways, I don't think anyone's really getting hurt here. If my passive research of chicken-keeping holds up, a chicken that's finished laying generally isn't good eating--it's transitioned from being a "fryer" to a "roaster", (i.e., is tough and stringy and needs slow cooking to be edible).

I'm slightly curious whether or not this population boom of antibiotic-free, amateurly-maintained livestock living in close proximity of humans will lead to a few new diseases being born. The first time folks started keeping animals around (maybe 5-10 thousand years ago) it was the breeding ground for all the various poxes, among other things.
