New Dynamics Processor Day!

Cheese Grits

Kick Henry Jackassowski
I just bought a pair of used DBX 163x compressors. Apparently they're so simple even I can operate them. Hooray! I'm mildly excited.

I have a Focusrite Platinum Penta preamp that has a pretty clean stereo comp in it, and I wanted something that was more of an effect as a compliment. So I naturally picked the cheapest thing that happened to come along and is reputed to be a "color" compressor. I'm pleased to find lots of good reviews on the internet, but I remain skeptical.

When they show up in a week or so, I'll squash the ever loving crap out of something and poast clips for you. :)

Do you have software compressors for your DAW or is this the only way you're getting compression?

Clips and pics required.....

I remember those a bit. I think a friend of mine used to have a couple in his studio. I wonder if he still has them....

I have a couple of compressor plugins, but I prefer to track with compression on things like vocals if possible. Also, I have a quarter inch reel-to-reel machine that I'm looking forward to using for mix down just as soon as I replace the belts and calibrate it. Having a couple of outboard compressors seems like a good plan for that sort of business.

Now THAT will be cool. We mixed the Felt album to 1/2" analog tape before having it mastered and it made a huge difference...

Someday I'll write and record something worthy of paying for a professional master engineer, but I'll be too old and fat for anyone to care. :(

That album was my last chance. Now I AM too old and fat.

And we paid for it all ourselves. It would have been nice for someone to have thrown a little money at us in appreciation but I guess we were aready past our expiration date :embarrassed:

I don't think enough people actually like music these days for labels to throw too much money at anyone. People like dancing, and partying, and playing Guitar Hero, and claiming they are "rock stars", and fashion, and collecting mp3s, and being a part of some scene or other, and talking about compression and autotune, and attempting to critique the participants on American Idol, and pretending to have liked some major label artist before everyone else as a means of... um... whatever. But I don't know that many people who just sit around and listen to music. How any of the Majors make money these days is beyond me. They just leverage marketable personalities I guess. I mean, most people are more interested in Will.I.Am's drama with Perez Hilton than they are in worrying about whether the Black Eyed Peas make music that's worth the hype.

I don't remember where I was going with this exactly, except that it's surprising when some label even bothers to consider the quality of the musicianship before selecting from the pretty young people they want to promote.

I don't really think they do. One of the people who rejected our album because he "didn't hear songs" later came back to me and asked me to help co-write some stuff for Jessica Harp (who later on was the other chick in the Wreckers). http://www.mtv.com/videos/the-wreckers/79483/leave-the-pieces.jhtml

He got fired from the label before anything could get working but I always thought it was funny that when it came to me in 2000 I didn't have any songs but in 2003 I was the man.
