Online chord charts......

I am constantly amazed at how bad so many of the online chord charts you look up are. I'm not particular good at figuring out a song from scratch, so I'll often look up a song as a starting point and then listen to the song to figure out if the chart is correct.

I was doing that earlier in the week for 'The Middle' by Jimmy Eat World. I found three or four different versions - and every single one of them was wrong. There are three (count 'um - one, two three....) chords in the song. That's it. And they still got it wrong. There is a slight change in order of the chords during the guitar solo. None of the versions even mentioned the guitar solo. They all managed to get the verses wrong. I don't know how - but they did.

If you are going to post a chord chart - do your freakin' homework people.

I generally just try to figure stuff out by ear. Chord charts on the internet could be coming from any 16 y.o. who's just been playing for three months, after all.

The first thing I do when transcribing music is always just to write down the overall structure; how may parts are there (verses, choruses, sections, whatever), how many bars does each part last, where in song are they, how often are they repeated, etc. This makes it a less daunting task to learn a new piece of music, to me at least.
 
I saw this as one of our click ads a while back, and it looks cool as shit for this kind of thing. I've not tried it yet, but I'm thinking it would save a tone of time. It basically scans through an Mp3 file and picks out the key, the chords, etc.

^^ My main concern is that the example shows only first position stuff, and not more complex chords.
 
You get what you pay for ... I factor in a healthy facepalm budget when I need to learn a song from internet tab.

Sadly that is what is going to happen. Before the internet, people relied on music books or any transcription they could get their hands on. How many of them were wrong as well as how many were right. With the internet being a ready available information highway, you will get the good with the bad.

The best one I found is when I was playing in my Heart tribute. The other guitar player used to say I played a certain passage wrong because it was in the book done another way. When you watch the video, neither of us were right but I played the right notes.....HAH!

I will need to figure out the solo. It's pretty iconic to the song so I want to stay really close to the original - except I am not planning on dropping my low 'E' string to 'D' for one note in the solo. There is actually a pretty good YouTube lesson on the solo, but I generally use TAB and my ears....
 
I'd probably be more open to using tabs/chord books if I was in a gigging cover band..but I've always learned by ear and do think that the availability of something like "Transcribe!" makes this so much easier that I can't really see why anyone wouldn't at least try it.

I still chuckle over an online tab that listed one of the chords as "A-something."

The mysterious, unnameable chord that the tabber couldn't quite figure out? Am.

I often use online tabs to get the general idea of a tune I'm covering.
then I go and fudge it all up anyways.
cut chords out, add others in...whatever works.
 
I'm gonna move this one to string theory now... Good topic for that forum :)
