Hmm. That's (the import feel thing) a little disappointing. I had been thinking about getting a Six Gun and putting a P90 in the neck to set it up like this:
However, now I'm thinking that I should maybe just give building one of my own a shot.
Maybe lose the pickguard and the finish, and have it look like a combination of that and this:

I say build one, even if you end up buying a neck from warmoth or someone like that.... You definitely have the skills for it and you'll end up using better materials.

I'd probably try doing my own neck. I think you're right in that I've got the skills for it, it's really just a matter of summoning up enough self-confidence and budgeting enough free time. I'm still taking the private lessons for lutherie, but we only focus on acoustic instruments, so a bolt-on w. truss rod and all of that would be something different.

There are a few here who would disagree with Mark's assessment of the Reverends but if you have the skills to build a guitar, that would certainly be fun. I personally think the Reverends and the import G&L models I have had feel a lot better than the standard import which is why I bought them and not something else. I am also in the "I love the Reverend neck" camp. That said, almost every tele shaped guitar I have played has felt really good and almost every strat has not, even though it is by far the most comfortable shape.
I entertained the idea of building a guitar from scratch (not a neck) but have since come to my senses. But I really am thinking I would like to find a guitar I like and putting my choice of pickups in it. I really like the neck pickup in my ASAT and the HB that was in my Legacy is still my favorite humbucker so I have thought about putting that combo in a guitar.
I think I wandered a little off track.

If you can build your own guitar do it. Anything you build yourself would be more special than anything you could buy.
I wouldn't write off the Sixgun, it's a killer guitar I have one with a wilki and I been playing exclusively lately. You can get great fat strat/ tele tones from it or you can roll on the bass contour and it sounds like a P-90 guitar.
I'm so bummed Mark had a crappy experiance at the NAMM show. It makes me want to ship him one of mine so he could play it through a proper amp.

The thing is that it's impossible to have a "great" experience at NAMM trying any guitar but I wish that they had an amp that showcased the instruments better. If I was buying guitars for my store to sell I would have walked right out of their booth since based just on that experience there isn't anything special about them. At some point I want to get to a dealer and really try them though since they make a lot of designs that look really cool. Between the cool shapes and the pickup choices there must be something I'd dig.....

This really bothers me. I know they always bring 2-3 15w Carr Vincent amps to all of the shows. I have no idea why they would have had a Blackstar. Something funky must have happened.
