Guy Movie Weekend Updates and Reviews

The ultimate Guy film is "Roadhouse"..ludicrous film, yet hugely entertaining. The first "Die Hard" too, for much the same reason. :embarrassed:

Oh, and "The Long Good Friday" and "Scum" would be up there too.

I managed to avoid it until last year when some friends of mine hosted some Irish-y-ish movie night thing (I know, I know) and decided on Boondock Saints. These were grown-ups, mind you, who should have known better. The same people were also involved in my first trip to a Renaissance fair in over two decades. Hmm...

Yeah, that's one of those movies that I show clips from in my Irish film class when discussing contemporary examples of Stage Irish.

One of the things that I love about Miller's Crossing is how brilliantly it subverts many of those cliches and stereotypes. Which is pretty remarkable, considering that it was written by a couple of Jewish-Americans and loosely based on a Dashiell Hammett piece. It's normally the kind of writing you only see onstage, or in British and/or Irish films.

The words "have you ever seen Boondock Saints?" are the equivalent of wearing a "I'm Pretentious!" t-shirt.

Same thing goes for talking about how shit Boondock Saints is. Nobody's trying to give it an oscar, but if you're looking for an entertaining, action packed, 'guy' movie, it fits the bill quite well. If you're looking for a flower blossom that touches the soul and leaves you a changed man, a mere shell of what you were before that epitiome of viewing pleasure graced your previously virgin eyes with it's magnifacent glory, it's weaving of thematic imagery like a Longaburger basket, it's dramatic ,climatic, systematic, automatic, hyyyyydromatic scenes that cut to the heart like a suicide katana wielded by the Samurai God of Cinema ..well then you're a douche. :embarrassed:

Yeah. No, I'm not looking for any of those things.

Look man, you've reviewed four "guy" movies this weekend, and you've showed a preference for "pretty smart" over "exceedingly dumb" yourself. Boondock Saints is a movie for teenage boys, too... just teenage boys who are a little bit older and are into dropping terms like "existentialism", "commercialism", "hypocrisy", "mass media", "corruption", etc.

Fuck that shit. I liked seeing a toilet get dropped on a dude's head, and two guys haning upside down from a rope after flubbing a job, and shooting the shit out of a room full of guys anyway. I like the whole vigilante aspect, and how the cop who is after them to burn them at the stake ends up respecting them and helping them out. It's Batman, redone, with two Irish dudes. What's not to love about that? Sure there are facepalm parts, and old schticks, but that comes with there territory.

Just finished Die Hard : Grade: A

Merry Christmas to all and to all a 'yippee ki yay motherfucker'. On one end of the spectrum you have 'Can I get some action please' and on the other end you have 'Ok, I know this is a movie and all, but that shit is just ridiculous. Give me a break'. Die Hard walks the line perfectly toeing around 'Give me a fucking break' but never really going over. Just enough corny lines, just enough unbelievable shit, but not too much. A classic.

Boondock Saints is a piece of faux-edgy crap.

Boondock Saints was alright. Not something I'd consider a must see.

Do not under any circumstances watch the sequel though. My idiot friend bought it on DVD coz he loved the first one. Within the first few seconds I could tell it was going to be terrible, and by the end we both agreed it's one of the worst movies we'd ever seen. It was funny enough though when I bought him Twilight and the 3-pack of J-Lo movies and hid them in his DVD collection, but he bought this one himself!  I make sure to bring it up on a regular basis. :embarrassed:

As for a suggestion... track down a Korean movie called Old Boy. :thu: (warning... is quite violent and messed up)

pulp fiction!!!!

That's actually what started this whole mess. I realized awhile back that I had never seen it, put in in my queue, watched it, liked it, and then realized that there's tons of 'must see' movies that I've never seen. So this weekend/week, since drummergirl is out of town, I decided to start with the must see 'guy movies'.

Conan the Barbarian is up next.

I wouldn't necessarily consider either of these to be "guy movies," but I would consider them to be great fucking movies. :embarrassed:
My wife doesn't care for either. When Lebowski was in the theaters, my father took me to see it, my first viewing & his 2nd. My stepmother went with him to see it the first time; when invited again she said "No, you two go see your ugly men's movie."

Most of the women I know who've seen the movie have liked it. It's definitely not a gender issue.

IDK, that's more from the "fucked up Asian cinema" AKA Asian Extreme genre than the guy movie category.
