Heat injuries can affect you for months (don't ask, just trust me :ack: ), so pay close attention to what your body is telling you this summer.

Since the 1970s, the Earth’s average surface temperature has increased by about 0.8–1.0°C (1.4–1.8°F). According to the geological record, Earth has warmed and cooled many hundreds of times over its 4.5-billion-year history. It’s become common for people to talk about weather and climate change at the same time. Climate change is long term while weather is short term.

Currently, the tropical Pacific is experiencing El Niño. There is roughly a 97% chance it will continue through Spring 2027. El Niño tends to cause wetter than normal conditions in some geographic areas while simultaneously causing drier than normal conditions in other areas.

El Niño historically causes some areas of Africa to experience drought while other areas experience flooding. So, yes, weather is happening on top of the planet’s current 0.8–1.0°C (1.4–1.8°F) warming trend since the 70’s. The planets warming trend has happened in a very short geological time period and it’s also a very hot summer in many areas.

Take comfort in knowing that the planet has experienced rapid climate changes in the past. Primitive humans managed to live through some extreme conditions without much technology other than fire and hunting tools.

Some people in Europe and Africa have died from extreme heat this year without any air conditioning. Say a prayer for them as you stay alive in your air conditioned home and vehicles.
 
The developing El Niño has noticeably moderated temps here in N AL. Don’t get me wrong it’s still hot and sticky, but we’ve had more cloud cover which tends to keep away the 95+ days. Highs are averaging in the high 80s/low 90s with some weekly rainfall. This is generally positive in that it keeps us out of late summer early fall drought conditions. Meteorologists say we can look forward to a wet late fall and winter with lots of cloud cover.
