Well known guitar makes or models that you've never played

I’ve never played a telecaster. For years I didn’t bother because I had a strat. Then I realized that I don’t get along with the 25.5" scale so I never bothered because I wouldn’t play one no matter how it sounds.

Let me introduce you to this. 24.75"

I've never played a Caparison

Can't think of too many brands that I haven't at least pulled off the wall of a music store and plinked on.

Never tried a Suhr, either :embarrassed:

Never played a Ric guitar. Had a 4003 bass for a while. I was a fool to get rid of it.
I’ve never played a Hamer or a Heritage guitar but I’d like to, just never been around any.
I’ve never picked up a Jackson or a Charvel. The style has never appealed to me so I just never give super Strats a second glance.
I plucked around on a fancy Firebird at the Gibson showcase in Nashville one time. 3 Firebird pickups, banjo tuners, and a vibrato. Super cool but it was about the most awkward feeling guitar I’ve ever picked up.

I had completely forgotten this until now, but I tried one of those Steinbergers with the little body in a guitar store back at the end of the 80s. Did not like it one bit, I couldn't balance it on my leg, didn't like the tones, the whole thing was weird.

I kinda forget that those guitars exist, because I never see them in real life and I don't think I listen to the kind of people who play them regularly. But now that I think about it, Bowie went through a phase using them in the 80s.

Yeah, they've generally been off my radar as well, with the exception of Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser using them with BoC when I saw them a couple times in the 90s.

Never played a Flying V, Firebird, or Explorer--or an actual 335 for that matter.
Never played a Suhr.

Oh man, that would be quite a list. I’ve never been one to haunt the guitar shops trying stuff out unless I was seriously ready to buy one.

Some highlights:
  • I don’t think I’ve ever played a Les Paul. Or any Gibson electric, other than a 335 I got to use for a while (and didn’t end up liking much). I seem to remember trying an SG once but can’t remember where or when.
  • Never played a Ric.
  • I have owned strats and teles, but never played a jazzmaster or jag.

Pretty much this, except on 335...in fact no Gibson electric at all
Never played an Ovation

I’ve messed around with most of the major guitar brands and famous models. I don’t think I’ve ever played a legit Duo Jet. And I’ve played big old Gretsches, but not a Country Gentleman.

I’m having a hard time thinking of too many things I’ve not at least messed with a a store. Maybe one of those Steve Vai things or an EVH Wolfgang.

Interesting how often Rics are an answer. When it comes to iconic guitar brands that we don't actually play they must be the champs.

I have a couple of headless steinbergers. They are great guitars, but the ergonomics do take a bit of an adjustment.

As for what I have never played...BC Rich, Tom Anderson, Ovation, Ernie Ball/Music Man.

Maybe the association with jangle pop is off-putting, plus the fact that they are rather expensive if you're not exactly sure what you can do with it. I did try one in a shop once just for giggles and because I like the looks of them but found the fretboard a bit claustrophobic. In hindsight it's odd, I guess, because vintage-style Jags have really tiny frets as well, and I got along fine with that with my average size hands.

Other guitars I consider iconic but haven't touched are the Vox Teardrop and the Red Special.

Good points. Ricks are super iconic, but in a very particular way. They scream Beatles, Byrds, CCR, Tom Petty, REM etc. but it's that jangle sound, and they're really expensive, which is limiting when it comes to someone who is looking for a main guitar. It feels like you're really committing to a particular style.

I have never played a Teardrop but I did try a Phantom once, it did not win me over. I would really like to try a Red Special.

they are associated big time with those bands but Guy Picciotto of Fugazi mainly played a Ric.

Don't they have some sort of weird distribution parameters? I hardly ever see them in shops. I've only known a couple people with them, none of whom I was in a "let me play your guitar" situation with.

I dunno but they are kind of hard to get. The one I tried in a shop was safe behind bars and I had to ask.

To my knowledge there aren't any budget versions or copies available either, so for a teen who've just experienced a Rickenbacker revelation it's really all or nothing.
