So stop voting for either of them. Find an independent whose views you mostly agree with and vote for them. Keep on doing this. At first it'll do no good but eventually the big 2 will start to lose enough votes to make a difference. Take the power back.
It really pisses me off when people moan about the big parties, then either vote for them, or don't vote. It's a democracy. That means YOU are responsible. cop0

Rocket motor test stands are so cool. I worked on one at Lockheed Santa Cruz for a while. The whole tower was made to be easily reassembeled after the explosion.It was an R&D stand, so the motors were small 'proof of concept' systems. Everyone would evacuate to the top of the hill, then they would turn on the sprinklers and light it off. I never got to see one blow, but heard the stories.
This particular stand (along with 3 others) was built in the early 1960s to hold the giant F1 engines for the Apollo programs. It remained in use for the Shuttle program. A1 was the only stand that could gimble during testing. Firing the smaller SSME engines in this stand was comparable to putting a bottlerocket in a bunker.
The B stand (not pictured in that youtube) held and test fired the entire first stage, clusterfiring the entire engine array.

Well, you seem like a pretty centrist, pro-state "normal" sort of dude so that's not surprising. The two big parties are built for your sort of voters. The outlaying parties tend to be fringe-ier in their approaches. Ross "Look at My Pie Chart" Perot is an obvious exception where a "3rd party" candidate was essentially offering the same as the two major parties but in slightly more eccentric/folksy packaging. Then again the Reform Party went off the rails pretty quick, eventually nominating crazy ol' Uncle Pat for the presidency.
Pretty much,. I guess.
I'm not big on discussing my political views in real life so I'm probably not going to get into this subject much more here, either though...

I've never understood this. I'm not bagging on you, but it's not like you can't "read" people's "politics in action" based on how they live and speak. And the overwhelming majority of Americans hold very similar political beliefs that differ mostly on issues of style and/or w/r/t very specific (and often pointless) pet causes. Though treating politics as "private" and "too contentious to even mention" is political too. Because Americans dig consensus.

And politics are a no-fly zone because why...Americans value consensus. Hence then "no talking about anything but stuff that doesn't really matter" rule here or in polite office "water cooler" conversation.
I think it's a bit childish that people cannot be trusted to have a serious conversation about substantive matters without the constant "shitstorm watch" that seems to go on here.

One reason why I won't discuss politics (especially here) is because I am in business for everyone's money. Not just the people I agree with. In this area especially people are incredibly polarized by their political and religious points of view. I'm not going to not make my house payment because I lost a large family account due to something I've said that has nothing to do with what I do for a living. At any point in time but especially in the current economy that would be irresponsible to my family more than anything else. Even though thats always been my outlook I learned the hard way in December when I played the National Anthem as a favor for my friend at a Democratic party function and it turned into not only a miserable shitstorm that ended in me banning Derivicus but also in some comments from customers here in the studio about "how can you support or stand on the same stage as Nancy Pelosi" instead of "thats really cool that you were asked to do that".
And unlike most of you guys I am my username. There is no anonymity for me to hide behind.

I can tell you I never had so much fun at a job in my life. It's a lot of hard work, and there are bureaucratic nightmares I can't even begin to describe. Still, it's awe inspiring to work on a piece of flight hardware. I was lucky enough to get on a program that was going on the shuttle, after years of testing different components and full on satellites.
Here are a few cool pics from the mission, taken with the astronauts personal cameras. They are a bit grainy, looks like they were scanned in. The copies I have at home are much clearer

Another payload shot. The CIRRIS 1A in the middle is a cryogenic infrared telescope, and the box with the megaphone looking thing is a far-ultraviolet telescope. There were a number of other instruments on board including a mass spectrometer and 2 data recorders.
The mission was to determine if we could detect a soviet missle launch from the arctic during an aurora storm.
