YACHT ROCK..... The Movie!!!

Watched it last night--very enjoyable.
I learned that I need to check out Thundercat.

I survived the Yacht Rock movie. :baimun: Most of it is just not my thing. I was into everything else happening at that same time.

Don't get me wrong. I respect the musicianship. I think Michael McDonald has a beautiful voice. With the exception of Steely Dan, I'd rather listen to my Dad's Big Band, jazz music.

I've listened to everything from 40's to Funk, Punk and old school Metal. But, I can't get into soft Yacht Rock. Oh well.

Hey guy, it's cool. Nobody here is going to judge you. You might not want to go Sailing with Chris and Mike though.

Christopher Cross can burn up the fretboard. But, I want to drown myself the minute the song “Sailing” begins. Make it stop!
How do you feel about his other wind inspired hit?

They really missed the boat not calling this 'Yacht Rock Doc' right? It's fun to say.

I don't like any of Christopher Cross's music.

I can thank Michael Jackson's album "Thriller." That kid diddler saved us all from the Yacht Rock radio assault. It's ironic the way Steve Lukather participated, playing on the album that killed the genre which he was most prolific playing and recording within during his career.

I can't distance myself too far here since I like Steely Dan. I'm a complicit fan in the genre I mostly disdain.

Let Yacht Rock Rot!

Saxon does a great Ride Like the Wind cover. I've seen them quite a few times over the years.

Wait a yacht-damned minute..... maybe this is a Mandela type thing...

... but on the Yacht Rock movie they say the term was coined in 2005 from the comedy skits online...

... but I fuckin SWEAR we referred to Christopher Cross and Jimmy Buffet as "Yacht Rock" WAAAY before that. That's why the skit made sense, because we were already using the term.

I would say that video series brought the term to the mainstream.... anyone else remember reality this way?

I say we dig back to the Wein Archives and look for the term.

PROOF!!!!.....

The SC TV sketch where Rick Moranis plays Michael McDonald and runs all over town from session to session.... that was in the 80's!

I know we were using the term back then!!!!

But they didn't refer to it as yacht rock in the sketch, did they?
I always heard it called things like "easy listening" and "soft rock" until the video series came out.
For me, it was the soundtrack to my childhood in the '70s - early '80s, listening to KNBR 68 out of SF in the back of my mom's Volvo station wagon.

Nah, it was a bit about Michael McDonald. For a time in the 80s, he seemed to be popping up everywhere. Let's see if this link works.

Edit: Nope, looks like you gotta watch it in YouTube.
