I'm not sure why MS has decided to move away from the traditional menu bar in their Office applications. It seemed very intuitive to me, if you wanted to do something file related, you went to the File pull-down...likewise with Edit, View, Preferences, etc. Now everything is buried in icons arranged by tabs. With Win8, they took that model a step further to the OS. Personally, I can't stand it.

That's what I did, too.
I think functionally and infrastructurally Win7 is the best they've done. Win8 is basically Win7 gussied up like a cheap whore that will probably give you an STD.

I think the problem with the Office suite was that the apps had become too complex for the traditional menu structure to work for users who didn’t already know where all the features are. Most developers deal with that by deprecating old features or splitting features into different products. Microsoft doesn’t have that luxury because the user base is huge and keeping users on Office is key to keeping Microsoft in the black.

It was an easy upgrade. So far it feels just like Windows 7 except there are some tiles in the start menu like 8 and I can open up and toggle between multiple desktops (which helps with a small laptop screen), but other than that, anyone familiar with 7 can use it immediately.

Yep. M$ is supporting 7 until 2020 last I heard.
We had to upgrade all on ourselves machines at working for credit card PCI compliance.If you have XP you should upgrade. Actually, if you've been using XP since March you should have already upgraded.... it hasn't been supported, patched, or virus updated all year.

I was planning on trying to get one if my old Windows machines running, but I'm not shelling out for a new license.

I did that too, with the quick launch and all. I had a goto meeting with some co-workers and when I shared my desktop they all laughed (I work for a software development company). I told them they knew I was a guitar player and for me, technology peaked in the 60's.

Oh, my XP machine died several years ago.
Now, my work machine was on XP until March before they finally switched it over to 7.
