What kind of guitarist/musician do you actually want to be?

I'm pretty much doing what I want to do as a musician, but I still dream about not playing funk, blues, rock, and metal for at least a year, and studying gypsy jazz exclusively.

I just want to be a great songwriter.

That's where I am, too. It would be nice to be a more proficient player, and I occasionally put effort towards that. But I'd really like to be able to write good songs because at the end of the day, it really is just about the song.

The two guys that inspired me to pick up a guitar in the first place had a way of making a song their own. They could really bring life to a song in a way that could send a shiver up your spine.

That's what I'd like to be able to do.

I like how I play. It took me a long time to get here, but I'm pretty happy with it. Like Mo says, the times I play the best is when I can (almost) not think about what I'm doing and just let go. I occasionally surprise myself that way.

I wanted to be a badass guitarist who could jam. The kind who can just plug in and rip unrehearsed.

I'll never be that.

I do love my songwriting and my singing though, and I have met a number of guitarists who can do exactly what I would love to be able to do and they would love to do what I do...so...I have to go with 'enjoy every moment' and be happy with what you can do. Perhaps if you think you 'have arrived' at your goal then you cease to improve or you get lazy. I don't know. Enjoy it when you can.

A combination of Hollywood Fats, Junior Watson, Junior Brown and Greg Koch.

I'm pretty happy with where I'm at, for what I like to play.
as far as gutar/bass goes, I mean.
I do wish I could sing a lot better though

I'm happy with my playing, but not happy with the lack of time I get to play with other guitar players. When I do get an opportunity, that's when I get to see what I do well and where I need work. I think it's playing with other players where you grow fastest and learn the most.

I just want to keep improving so I can play anything I can imagine or play anything I hear relatively correctly without having to labor over things constantly.

I'm reasonable but I want to keep improving.
