What is the appeal of Southern Rock?

All they see are the stars and bars; not unlike some others, just with a different outlook.
actually, they (those fans) are a big part of why i stopped playing southern rock in bars. it's not that i don't like the music, i do. but a lot of the fans of that style of music are freakin' deplorables. an i'm NOT gonna be encouraging them.

I've heard both Richie Furay and Rusty Young take credit for inventing Southern rock, with Poco.

Or was it Country Rock? Is there a difference?

They released their first album in the same year the Allman Bros did the same. And I consider ABB to be the first essential Southern Rock band.

But not Country Rock.

So maybe they're right

a lot of the time with ABB....it's more like southern jazz rock

Country Rock. But they didn't invent it. Even if you consider what they did with Buffalo Springfield as a precursor to their work with Poco, Young and Stills are more responsible for 'that sound'. I'll give the nod to Gram Parsons.

ABB is the only southern rock I really like. That said, Molly Hatchet do a kickass version of this ABB song:

yea....i'd go with that being the best version.
in fact i like the whole first album.
of course, i was stationed an hour and a half from Jax when it came out, so there's that. and i used to see them play in local clubs before they got a record deal.

It's the only thing from Florida that is worth a shit.Well oranges too.

Savatage was from Florida too. They were pretty darned good :embarrassed: They are known as TSO now :)

Three guitars, piano, two vocalists trading verses yet no one big dicks each other to hog the spotlight. These guys were only in their 20's when they recorded this. I can see where some might not like certain aspects of Southern Rock but I really dig the musicianship

Steve Gaines took that band to a whole 'nuther level, and Ronnie had even commented as such. and Steve is the only one to ever do lead vocals alone in that band. (ain't no good life).

Almost all music is culturally specific; some help build that culture, others adopt it wholesale, and others adopt only parts (like the sounds). And people are complex -- most people don't craft a life of perfect consistency.

Gram Parsons rather memorably was not exactly part of "country culture." (See: McGuinn, Roger; how to tell Ralph Emmery to piss up a rope with just a smile.).

But the lyrics to many Skynyrd tunes are pretty socially regressive. And some were anything but. Happens.

I do understand the whole bit of not playing 'those songs' when you know who they're going to draw to a bar. That's criticizing the culture, and it's fair, and it has nothing to do with impugning the character of some band member.

I've had a lot of conversations with people the past few years regarding geographic stereotypes; hard to figure out just what's fair.
