What is going on that is actually new and innovative in Guitardom?

I just had a quick play with Guitar Rig 5 last night...that modelling stuff is getting to be very, very good.

I also got to have a quick go through a friends Axe-Fx rig......holy heavenly toanz batman! Major GAS.

Let's face it, all the new crap in the world doesn't change the fact that most of us will still have our day jobs, which have nothing to do with the luxury of playing guitar...

Maybe not "new" but more "new & IMPROVED" - the Fender G-Dec 3 Thirty Blues (or Country or Metal) Edition

Now it seems like oddly and sadly the Blues Edition is being discontinued (while the Country and Metal are being continued), but you can still find a few of them around for $100 off or $299 or so.

Now stay with me here

You get one of these

To connect to one of these which MF has (until just recently) been shipping out for $130 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/kustom-kpc15p-15-powered-pa-speaker

Then Hal Leonard and Fender got together to put out several books like this http://www.musiciansfriend.com/book...r-play-along-songbook-sd-card/h76442000000000

Which come with a computer SD card to insert into the G-Dec 3 Thirty. These can be found for around $20

The card provides appropriate backing tracks for each of the songs, including a separate demo track to demo the lead guitar.

It's fun without the powered PA, but with the powered PA, it sounds great. Of course with a separate PA cab and amp, you could do better, but I've got $430 into the rig now (excluding the several books I've bought) and it's a lot of fun. Sure you can do the same thing with other books and backing tracks, but to have it all come out of the same source and automatically tweak you guitar tone/fx to appropriate settings is more likely for me at least to make it happen.

I had the previous generation of G-Dec, but this one is a step up. (or two). Plus the 99 preset backing tracks on this Blues Edition are sooooo much more usable to me than the backing tracks were on the original. Plus it comes with FUSE so you can go onto the FUSE community and download more backing tracks.

I like some of the 'new' things I am seeing in materials used for construction of instruments. It seems a new carbon fiber guitar company pops up every year, and it will only be a matter of time before someone takes this mainstream. I envision it being used as a wood/carbon layer effect, much like parker has done using composites to make ultra thin guitar bodies. I also can see it in necks, either as a whole neck replacement materials, or as a strengthening material for high stress areas. I somewhat surprised Gibson hasn't added some carbon fiber reinforcement to their necks around the truss rod channel/headstock. I also dig the torrefied maple (roasted maple, baked maple) thing a lot. I also was impressed with a flaxwood guitar I played a little while back. Basically made from wood chips in a resin base. These things all will become more mainstream as tropical woods fade from use.

I showed the Flaxwood above and really am curious of them. I think if I was to give out that much for a guitar it would probably be for one of those. I'd love for them to start making replacement necks from it.
