WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO......RIGHT NOW......Mk III

I was just listening to some Laura Nyro. It is hard to see why she didn't get more attention as a performer. One track was a live version of "And When I Die"; it was so much better than Blood, Sweat, and Tears and the Peter, Paul, and Mary versions. Sweet Blindness is another great song. Other artists did well with her songs but she just didn't seem to be able to break through.

Lot of her stuff comes off as a bit hammy to me. Bit jazz-handsy.

I see it as more gospel-tinged. I could do without Wedding Bell Blues, but she wrote and performed some good stuff. I'd take her over Carly Simon anytime.

I think some of it is that the backing often isn't gutsy enough for her voice on the albums. She's going full steam and there's a somehwat lively easy listening orchestra behind her. Haven't seen much live stuff but I like her Monterey performance.

I know tralf mentioned him the other day but this one has been getting served to me for a few weeks or months. Intro now buried in my head. Original popped up a few days ago.

I like that version better than the original (I like the original a lot too). The drums are really driving in Robert Gordon's version, and I like Danny Gatton's little arpeggio thing.
