So fucking love the Toy Matinee album. I was listening to !! Track sof Whack the other day and it reminded of how I thought of Trevor Rabin Yes and Steely Dan the first time I listened all the way the Toy Matinee album. For that was a huge win-win and I assumed we'd hear so much more from them.
What I've been somewhat consumed with lately is the new Living Colour. Great originals and some nice covers. They do a job doing something new and different with covers...which should the standard. Love everything about the band, but miss Muzz. That said, Wimbish is stellar. Here's their Inner City Blues:
I quit listening to Living Colour past the first CD.
As for Toy Matinee, check out the genius of Kevin Gilbert. He is the key genius of Toy Matinee, Thud, Giraffe, etc.
Yeah, I know all about Kevin. What I didn't know until a few yars ago was his involvement with Sheryl Crow's debut...I'm not a big fan of hers, but once I heard a few of those tunes again you can definitely hear a boat load of Kevin's harmonic and melodic sensibilities. I've been listening to the Third Matinee album a bit recently as well.
But I've always loved Living Colour, got into them before they really broke when a video for Middle Man came on while my sister was watching BET while I was reading a guitar magazine in the living room. My head popped up and I bought the cassette a day or two later. A few weeks/months go by and Cult of Personality breaks. But Time's Up was a significant step forward, as was Stained. It's not that they were necessarily better albums, but they were the work of an obviously and continuously evolving musical collaboration.
The two previous albums, since the reunion, didn't get a lot of spin from me and I'm feeling a need to revisit them.
