Well I went to a sleep specialist today for the first time, and they think I might have the APNEA...

My only real side effect after several years of use is that my tinnitus is way worse. I thought that was weird since my bands play with less stage volume than bands I played with in the past. Turns out it's a common side effect from CPAP since your ears "hear" that air pressure in your sinuses all night long.

Strange, but my insurance covered the test 100% (not even a co-pay) if done at the sleep center, but would not pay for a home sleep test. So, everyone should check with their insurance before scheduling either version of the test.

Ahh, that is odd. You'd think insurance would jump at the chance to cover a far cheaper home test.

Unless of course they are in bed with the sleep test & CPAP equipment industry. If the insurance companies get a kick back from the CPAP industry, they can all buy an island to retire on. It keeps the industry thriving. Quantity over quality makes money.

I think your tinfoil hat is too tight there

Would ear plugs help that? Any more I find it hard to sleep without earplugs, and having a noisy machine right next to you as you try and fall asleep wouldn't help matters. At least for me.

It's not an external sound... it's an internal not actually happening sound generated from the pressure in my sinuses.
