Walnut Hollowbody Build

Fill it, band it with veneer, then bind.

That's an idea. The only veneer I have on hand is curly mahogany. I don't think that's a good match. Would have to go buy walnut.
I have lots of curly maple I can make binding with.

The easy way out is fill it and paint it. Gives me a good excuse to break out the chrome yellow.

This is two coats of chrome yellow on bare wood. Two more coats and it would be completely opaque.
It is, however, an aniline dye in shellac. It will go more amber and more transparent over time.

When it's all sanded smooth, it's kind of a tv yellow/butterscotch kinda thing.
Mixed with lacquer, though, it comes out more like this.

I'm aiming for less than 4 1/2lb when finished.
The holes are 37 mm deep, leaving 10mm (or 3/8") for the back thickness. Total depth now is 47mm or about 1 7/8". The top is 6mm, or 1/4" thick. So, the whole thing comes to 53 mm or about 2 1/8" thick.
