No matter where or when you served, thank you for being willing to stand for our freedom.

I always think about my grandfather on Veterans Day. He loved the Marine Corps (4th Marine Division). He was badly wounded on Saipan and carried shrapnel in his leg for the rest of his life. The wounds to his psyche were far worse but were never treated, a common occurrence then and now.

I admire him most because he saw humanity at its absolute worst yet he still managed to be a kind and kick ass grandfather and a very talented artist and student of history. He was also hilarious. Thanks Pa! You were one hell of a guy.

Thank you veterans. I may not be a stand at attention flag waving red white and blue wearing "patriot" and may take a knee if I feel the need. And so therefore, I greatly appreciate your service in allowing me to do that. If I do, I hope any veteran that sees it will see it as a sign of respect for their efforts, due to my exercising the rights they fought to protect.

This is a special Veterans Day for me. My grandfather was a captain in the navy. He died a couple years ago and after my grandmother died last year they were put on the list to have their ashes buried at Arlington National Cemetary. They had the service 2 weeks ago, so he has been in my thoughts a lot more than normal these last couple of week. I learned some things about him at his memorial service that I wish I knew when he was alive. Like during the Cuban Missle Crissis, he lead a team of code breakers and had weekly meeting with Bobby Kennendy in his office. And something that was hilarious and shows his sense of humor. As kids, we all saw his stationary that had his name, Eugene W. Ostlund. My cousin told a story on how he was going to name his son Jack Wolfgang after my grandfathers middle name of Wolfgang. My aunt told him our grandfathers middle name wasn't Wolfgang. But the funny part was he always told me he had no middle name, just an initial like Truman. He told another cousin the W was for something else. He kept the stories straight with us all.
