Question: The Only Guitar You Need

I can do every gig with a standard-wired Les Paul. I pretty much want every guitar to sound like that, anyway, so why bother playing anything else? So, if I had to unload everything else, I'd keep those.

OTOH, I feel badly for guitars that get left out and try to use the gig-worthy ones with some regularity. I got a Flying V recently, so I gig with that once in a while just because it's fun to play a V.

I've been doing pretty well with my b-bender tele with Bare Knuckle blackguard 55 pups. I used it exclusively in my last two gigs, my back-up guitar never left the stand. My tele handled the jangly clean of 'Brass in Pocket' right through to thick fuzz squalls on 'Cherry Bomb' and '7 Nation Army', thanks to brave usage of the tone and vol pots. It's more than enough for what I play. They do say nothing sold more Gibson Les Pauls than the sound of Jimmy Page's telecaster. :embarrassed:

I do all of my gigging on one guitar, and 90+% of my playing at home on one (different) guitar. It's most about where they sit in my house. The other 10 or so guitars I have are basically special effects for recordings.

Since "All Modelers sound the same now."It's not hard to imagine day when nobody would need more than one. Play a Les Paul that sounds like Tele through your "amp". Play a 335 and it now sounds like a Strat. Tired of the fire breathing pickups? Just scroll then play some surf. Just think of your guitar as a midi controller.

I have often toyed with the idea of eliminating everything in my collection except a Strat, a Tele, a Les Paul, and some kind of hollow/semihollow (Gretsch, Ric 330). I feel like anything beyond those are just kind of variations on a theme.

If I had to pick just one I think it'd probably be the Les Paul.
I am not nearly as experienced as you or the others who liked your post, but I would think that, or my tele with my P90 in the neck.

One could argue that if you consider buying a Les Paul for recording purposes, you might as well get a Tele. You can make a Tele sound like a Lester but not really the other way around, so as a bonus you get a Tele, which might come in handy before you know it! Two for one, what's not to like.

If I can’t cover what I need to with my Tele and my fractal. I don’t want to play that gig. My Tele has nothing but a bridge pickup and I can get anything I need from it. Every other guitar I have is just extra and because I like them.
