The Incredible Evolving Song! Who wants to play a recording game?

I'm would really like to collaborate with a bunch of you folks on a music project or two, but my schedule is screwy and demanding I'm not very reliable as a result. Also, we already have original recording fests and cover fests to take up our time and energy, and I miss most of those as it is. So, to be able to participate in something, I probably need to create a recording project where anyone and everyone can participate on a song, there is no time constraint, and we don't even necessarily have to agree on genre, lyrics, etc.

Here's my thought about how this would work:

1. An agreed-upon person (I would be willing) posts up an original mid-tempo pop/rock tune, including the final mix and the individual tracks printed without effects (i.e., no reverb, compression, et cetera).

2. Everyone agrees to work in 16-bit, 44.1 kHz to make life easy

3. Everyone agrees to work in the same tempo and time signature to make life easy.

4. After the initial song is posted, anyone who wants to participate builds an original recording half from the tracks already posted, and half from their own original recorded tracks.

5. When the new songs is done, you post the final mix, any newly recorded tracks without effects, and any of the former tracks which you have sliced up or modified.

6. As the library of songs and tracks grows, we can mix and match tracks from several recordings with new tracks to keep changing up the song.

So, for example, if you wanted to use Prages' drum track and MicWalt's voice, and mix that with your own bass, synth and guitar, you could (assuming those folks have participated).

Any interest in something like this? It could be pretty casual and open ended.

EDIT: Below is the song we decided to start with!

Okay, here's the first zip file.

It's 225 mb, so be patient. There should be the following tracks in this file:

Drums
BassDI
BassMic
AcousticRhythmCAD
AcousticRhythmAKG
AcousticLeadCAD
AcousticLeadAKG

I'm uploading the electric guitars and vocals now.

And here are the electric guitars and vocals.

This one is 200mb.

Cool, so do we want to agree on a starting point? Up tempo? Down tempo? Blues, Pop, Prages-rock? Tamoore-power-pop? I think it will be more fun if we all start out on the same page.

I'm sure the tracks should ultimately go in the recording forum, Mark, but would it be okay to leave this part here for the discussion?

I'm game for any genre.

If you want, we can even use one of my songs for the starting point, though we certainly don't have to.

absolutely.

The way this forum seems to work is that things need to start herre to get momentum before being spun off to where they need to go :embarrassed:

Well blues would be a bit limiting, so anything but....

I don't see why we couldn't have a couple of these running at any given time. If Prages wants to post one of his songs to get the ball rolling, that would be great. Then we could add one of my songs or something else later.

Sorry breaux but I refuse to work in anything except 24 bit. :cheese:

Seriously though, it sounds like fun but lately all of my musical time is being taken up recording band stuff. We work on the stuff a lot, did a nine hour session on Sunday so as much as we are working I'm not really too motivated to do anything else.

Plus I'm just starting work on putting together a benefit show for the family of a friend of mine that passed away recently and that will involve booking a venue, coordinating getting all the bands (the show will have at least 5 bands at this point) that he was in together for it, rehearsing with the band that I was in with him for the show and promoting the fuck out of it so we can raise some serious cash.

I'm in.
This should really be done with .wav files, rather than MP3s, though. And some folks (like myself) might not have the web space to post multiple .wavs.

I'm sorry about your friend, DNH. Mojo you your and yours.

Regarding everything else, I think half the point is that you could participate four months from now if you wanted.

It's good that you're so busy with creative stuff though. :)

I could give our usernames and passwords for my FTP site, and you could just upload there. Would that work?
