Song suggestions needed for an American-themed party...

beauty-pageant.jpg

holy crap, that is creepy! :messedup:

humourous stereotyping is all done in good spirit. An American themed party is meant to have exaggerated American stereotypes, just like you guys do St Patrick's Day.

Geez, you guys can't even have a laugh at your own expense? You should hear British people about Britain... Self-deprecation is a national sport. Have a laugh, it's almost weekend :thu:

Im sure you guys would appreciate a bunch of Americans making fun of you. Having spent plenty of time there, I can tell you, you dont.

I thought this thread was pretty funny.... but I also watch a lot of BBC and see how they take shots at their own societies and the French, and the Swedes, and so on and so on....

....so my recommendation would be to have lots of things like twinkies, Coke (cola), burgers, Lays potato chips... and have all the girls wear tutus with cowboy hats. :embarrassed:

Music.... John Cougar Melencamp, Bruce Springsteen, Toby Keith, and anyone else that routinely waves amurrican Flags to their music for emphasis. :helper:

A guy asks a legitimate question for suggestions and all we have is a lesson in how to hate our home town.
Gotta love it.
No wonder obama got elected.

I have lived here for 13 years and if there's two things I learned here:

- The British like a drink. or two.
- The British like banter, taking the piss out of each other.

Both usually go together. That doesn't meant there aren't people around who don't like that sort of thing, but it's generally accepted that the British kind of invented self-deprecating humour

Yeah. Self deprecating means poking fun at one's self. I don't really see that here.
I'm the fucking king of self deprecating humor. It's a great way to make jokes without trashing other people, which is what's happening here.

:facepalm: As I said, it's all done in good humour, nothing offensive was said. Maybe you are a little touchy yourself today, I don't know. I don't think there was anything that warrants overreaction. :shrug:

Anyway, have a nice weekend! :cool:

Translation:

"Fuck you. Just kidding."

Given political events in the us over the last five years, many of us who love our home are pretty sick and fucking tired of people (including our own fucking government) trashing the place and pretending they aren't.

Piss off.

yeah, because that's exactly what we were doing :facepalm:

We just poked a little fun as most here except you here recognised. Maybe you should ask yourself why you are so upset about a joke about your national stereotype.

Perhaps you should stop celebrating St Patrick's day over there as well, in case some Irishman finds the stereotyping offensive. :shrug:

Anyway, I am sure our jokes were MUCH worse than your massive thread derailment. I am sure the OP will thank you for it

I was doing great til the asshole brigade from guitar jam showed up.

Really, I think the fellows poking fun were poking fun. It's been a rough bit for you there, that is a lot of craziness to take in and compute. Stress is no good. I understand your view and getting a bit miffed, but all the same, I think they were just poking fun a bit, I didn't take any of it as serious.

:(

Honestly I would prefer this get back to songs about America. I get that some folks are upset about other folks comments. I am a very proud American citizen but I personally am not offended. Like Wok said above we have St Patricks' Day and Cinco De Mayo here and we also spend quite a bit of time on this forum joking about what is essentially the Walmart culture that exists in this country. Perhaps you should all stick to the OP's question of what songs to play. If I were to ask what songs to play for St Patricks Day or Cinco De Mayo how would that thread turn out?

Perhaps I'll make jokes about your mother. Would that be cool?

I don't celebrate St Patrick's day.

Big difference between making fun of your own family and making fun of someone else's.
I don't see the Americans here making too many racial stereotype jokes about the Japanese or the Russians or the Greeks or anyone else but ourselves.

technically American Woman is about the Statue of liberty, a French chick so that might work...

okie from muskogee

We don't smoke marijuana in Muskogee;
We don't take our trips on LSD
We don't burn our draft cards down on Main Street;
We like livin' right, and bein' free.

I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee,
A place where even squares can have a ball
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,
And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all

We don't make a party out of lovin';
We like holdin' hands and pitchin' woo;
We don't let our hair grow long and shaggy,
Like the hippies out in San Francisco do.

And I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee,
A place where even squares can have a ball.
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,
And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all.

Leather boots are still in style for manly footwear;
Beads and Roman sandals won't be seen.
Football's still the roughest thing on campus,
And the kids here still respect the college dean.

We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,
In Muskogee, Oklahoma, USA.
