PSA: Hotone Freeze B

Dew Knot Humps

Philistine
The “fun practice amp” thread piqued my curiosity about the Hotone nano amps. I saw a Freeze B for 60 bucks plus tax so I bought it.

What a waste of time. I certainly wasn’t expecting it to replicate the sound and feel of a Friedman tube head but I was hoping it would be a harmonically rich sounding distortion pedal that had enough juice to power a speaker cab.

It powers the cab.

It also emits the worst 60 cycle hum I’ve ever heard with single coils literally rendering a Tele or Strat totally unusable. I was actually becoming pissed off about it. I know it’s a cheap pedal but releasing something this noisy makes you kind of think Hotone doesn’t give 1/4 of a sh!T about their products.

I fooled around with it for about 45 minutes and could not get anything resembling a pleasing tone out of it. For some odd reason if you put the gain past 1 o’clock with a Les Paul it emits a shrill, unmusical feedback. That I understand because nobody would ever use a Les Paul into a hi/gain amp would they?

Long story short this is a strong contender for the Worst Piece of Gear to Ever Darken My Door participation trophy.

I’m all about cheap “under the radar” pieces of gear that sound good. This is not one of them.

Interesting. I have a Hotone floor amp head that I really like.

I think with the budget brands there are usually a couple of good products and lots of not so good products. Behringer comes to mind. It sounds (pun!) like you and mystix got the gems in the Hotone line.

I got the unpolished turd.

Bummer. I got the Soldano version of it and I like it enough to get the freeze b. I couldn’t get it back in the box fast enough. I experienced the same thing as you. Horrible.
