Phil Collins v Peter Gabriel

Phil or Peter?

I have owned and listed to many Peter Gabriel albums and have never wanted to own a Phil Collins record. Plus, Laurie Anderson never did a duet with Phil Collins...

You probably own at least one album you like that Phil plays drums on and you don't even know it. No, really.

Interestingly, Phil plays on several songs on what is my favourite - and best imo - Peter Gabriel album. Coincidently the very same album where the infamous "gated snare verb" was first used. Actually a gated and compressed talkback microphone though, to be precise. That was reportedly all Hugh Padgham's fault, or lucky accident, depending on how you look at it.

Peter was always the better songwriter of the two, I doubt many would disagree with that.

There is a difference between records that Phil played drums on and Phil Collins records. I see the discussion as being about their solo output, and I just don't care for Phil Collin's solo stuff. I am not saying his music is bad, but it doesn't suit my tastes.

Peter Gabriel created music for movies that were actually legitimately good.
I was kidding about the Oscar. What a horrible song. It left me jaded towards The Acadamy. I'm not sure what songs Peter did for movies. I would have to look that up. I'm only familiar with what I've heard on the radio from both artists.
I thought Against All Odds was great. I never saw the movie.

Gabriel's voice is otherworldly.

Phil tried his best early on after Peter left to cop it so they could do all of the old songs, but he couldn't maintain it and found his own voice...one that was just as valid, but was also far simpler (simple does NOT = bad).
