Open mic

Nice Ese shorts on the bass player. Normally don't see those outside the barrio too frequently!

Our bass player was a giant tool but he was the singer's best friend. As soon as the singer quit, we kicked him out and became a 3 piece. That was also 20 years ago.

Yes - Typically the venues in the are that hire bands have open mics. Anytime I try to contact a new venue, they respond, "Have you been to one of our open mic's? That's a good way to get in".

If the venue is worth it then I'll show up to the open mic with my other guitarist and let them know we are there for a try out.

I've also been to open mic's before with my loopstation just to goof off a bit.

I did one open mic many years ago. I played two covers. Everyone sang along very loudly. It was amazing. And yet I still walked away thinking I sucked ass. So I never did it again.
Crippling anxiety is so fun.

Most of the Open Mics around here are pretty damned good.... there's enough Karaoke out there that if someone wants to warble out-of-key they can go there. Some of them are downright intimidating jams. One that used to be hosted by this jazz-fusion bass monster around here was just siiiiiiiick. Many players way better than me would go and be intimidated enough to not get their guitars out of their trunk.

The bass playing host often plays with Jake Klinnenger from Umphrey's McGee when he's in town at a local venue called "Vegetable Buddies"

(below is a scheduled jam show they do every once in a while called "Improvatron". It has a different lineup every time, but you can see Jake on Guitar and Buddy on Bass.)

Now you can see why I played guitar for many years before I dared step out on a local stage. :embarrassed:

Doing it with someone you trust and know they don't think you suck would make it A LOT easier.
Flying solo, I'd have to be on something highly illegal to even consider it.
well, @Chad is there...but he's on drums...lol.

and my GF can sing beautifully.

and the other guitarist is totally awesome and competent.

so yeah, it could be a lot worse.

yes, me on drums is a giant lol

This place is going to be the best place to get out for the first time. After going there for 2 weeks, even if it is a total disaster, it still won't be the worst thing I've seen there.
