Question: Official Music League Thread

Good showing for the Anna Calvi track! Well done, Bones. I almost posted a different Anna Calvi track. I also hemmed and hawed over whether to post Funkadelic 'Maggot Brain'.

So, in the next round I should have an outsized advantage given where all you nerds live vs. the significant legacy of Chicago punk.

true.

The way I was reading local band was it needed to be a band that primarily played around your city and never really got too well known outside the local scene. If that’s not the case I could go with Better than Ezra and smoke all y’all.

I’m taking this as a primarily very local thing and I’m not gonna trot out any Mekons or Naked Raygun or Touch and Go stuff like The Jesus Lizard on y’all. Charles is probably gonna have a pretty hard time coming up with punk rock from Connecticut so…

I mean, it would be cheating to post up Steve Albini’s Big Black covering Wire or somesuch.

I’m from Atlanta originally

Judging by the posts over the last day I'm not 100% sure y'all know what punk is. What is that crap jbj posted? It ain't punk. So go ahead and use it please.

What's always been funny about the term "Punk".... in the 70's that label was equally applied to Blondie, New York Dolls, and the Sex Pistols..... when I was growing up, I would hear people call Billy Idol punk and I'd give them a side eye and think "These people have never listened to Suicidal Tendencies, Black Flag, or the Circle Jerks."

On the other hand, maybe it's better if there's not a bunch of hypenated-punk like there is hyphen-metal... :embarrassed: I've not been hardcore into punk, but have often been punk-adjacent... like Violent Femmes, P.I.L. or the Clash... who IMO are all Rock-Punk more than hardcore punk. I love the energy of punk, I just like some melodies and funky stuff added to my punk. :helper:

There are no 'real' punk bands from this part of Colorado that are on Spotify, so I went with the closest variant I could find.

It's all good. The variety makes the listening better.

Feargal Sharky was the lead singer of The Undertones.

One could argue doing a total 180 from your roots and putting out some smooth AOR with a groovy smooth slide solo is exceptionally punk.

Or not :embarrassed:

The best part of (and honestly the main reason I wanted to participate in) this league is digging for music I haven't heard in a while, or bands that maybe I haven't fully explored their catalogue.....

Fooook I'm having a good time with some of the stuff that I've uncovered whether it was applicable to the week or not!.....
