New car thoughts. EDIT: I ORDERED A TESLA MODEL Y.

An EV out here in the middle of nowhere seems a bit impractical yet. Not enough infrastructure. But a plug in hybrid that can work on e-mode around town would take care of the lion's share of my driving, Probably 80-90% of it, and be more practical for road trips across the nothing lands for the rest of the driving.

So thinking Prius Prime. And it seems like just getting in line for a new one in the trim level I want is the way to go based on the used market and how those are just about as much right now, and considering financing. Was thinking XLE level for leather seats.

What am I missing?

here's what you need....i8 hybrid BMW  :bigg:

I had a 2007 Prius for 11 years, one of my favorite cars ever. I still miss that feeling of charging the batteries up as I'm coasting to a stop.

I didn't go back to a Prius because I wanted something a little wider and heavier to feel more stable on the highway, since I'm driving back and forth between Houston and Central Texas every week. And there were a couple expensive repairs towards the end, but the car was 10 years old at that point.

My wife bought her first Prius in 2004. She drove it until last year and bought another one. Loves it!
It's just the regular hybrid, not the plugin, but still...

I want the plug in because so much of my town driving could be done in a golf cart really, and even up and down valley would easily be in range. I could go for weeks without using any gas during lots of the year.

Makes sense.

I think there are a few plugin hybrid options these days. I haven't paid that much attention though because I won't be getting another car anytime soon and that car will be electric for sure. I like the idea of the Ford Lightning F150 (can power your house) but don't really need a truck and it's still a few years away from mass production I think

I have no interest in a Prius or any other frugal commuter.... but i'm VERY interested in the electric vehicles that offer high performance.

I was kinda surprised when I found out that the Lexus NX 450+ and Rav 4 Prime "plug in hybrids" is kind of a misnomer.... yeah you can plug it in... but it's a very short range, primarily ICE to charge the battery type vehicle. I was hoping they would be plug in electric 99% of the time with a ICE (gasoline) engine only needed for long trips.

Looking forward to the next Gen models..... I expect to have an electric vehicle in the driveway in the next 4 years.

My brother is a salesman for Sysco and drives around all day 5 days a week. He got a Model 3 and loves it and has not had a single instance of not having enough range. He gets home with about 50 miles left every day. Paid $51k for it and CarMax would offer him $57k currently!

If you go PHEV, what kind of total range are you looking for cause that really seems to vary quite a bit....much more so that EV only range.

People only mover or do you need any storage space, etc?

I'd like the throwback concept with the Eluminator electric crate motor kit, please. Well, not this color.

The 25 that Prius has is enough for EV range. Getting groceries, very short drive to the office, 22 miles total on days to go skiing up at the resort. Even if I did an extra errand, which is not something I do very much, probably still within 25 or just over, in which case the gas motor can kick in to get me home. But, that would be pretty rare. For total range the 640 mile range the Prius Prime has using gas is huge, and helpful for trips between places like Sun Valley, and the Seattle area, Salt Lake City, California, etc. The driving in those areas, at least for the next few years, have LONG distances without any supercharging much available. My buddy's long range Tesla model S, with I think 300 something, can get here and back, but it needs to be really planned out.

Which is also why I think the Prius is a good bridge between now and several years from now. And, I do spend time out in the woods where having that safety/comfort of knowing you can get home is good. that mileage is under a hundred miles usually. But there is NOTHING out in those spaces so good total range is nice. The Rav4 looks interesting too, but would not get quite as good gas mileage on long trips.

@Lerxst regarding storage, the Prius has enough for what I need for now, due to the hatchback. Laying down a bike, even sleeping in there in a pinch, all can be done. People moving would mostly be for shorter trips. Looking at the other smaller plug in options, such as the Honda, I definitely want the hatchback the way I use cars. I I use that VW Passat TDI sport wagon (I really wish there were more sport wagons) that I have in a similar way. Though it is rare that I sleep in it. Though I could. The throwing a bike in so it doesn't get buggy and reduce mileage on a road trip, that sort of thing, is the main thing.

The Tesla Model Y would be awesome with the hatchback feature, and I love the minimalist styling. Wouldn't mind just a bit more clearance. But again, I think I want the infrastructure to fill in first. If I were doing that, I guess I would be considering also the Rav4. So in this moment, the Prius PHEV, the Rav4 PHEV and the Tesla Model Y long range (with AWD) seem the best bets. The best winter rig would be the Rav4.

The main thing there is driving between here and the Seattle area. Probably need at least one charging stop, and then want good charging better than a regular outlet at the destination either way. Surprisingly, no superchargers here in the SV area yet. Though there are a lot of Tesla's about. Mostly 3's, S's etc. The Y looks like a decent option. Wish it had just a bit more clearance for rocks in dirt roads.

Someday, they will make an e-truck with a 250/2500 level carrying and towing capacity. That might be the vehicle I am trying to bridge to. Or a Model Y if a bigger truck that can haul a camper and tow a boat is not coming along. And just use my current truck only for truck stuff and not going to get groceries. The VW Passat TDI I have is getting long in the tooth and is blowing out too much black on winter start ups, etc. over 200k now on it.

These folks are hiding electric motors inside of shells that look like classic V8s.

It's pretty pricey, but they're not really running at scale yet - not sure they ever will, but it's a cool idea and seems to target the high-dollar builders and restorers.
I had thought of it a couple of years ago, but not in the way that they are doing it.

Now, after looking at the maps of Superchargers, and plans for upcoming ones, I am being more drawn to the Tesla Y model, which is a way nicer car, and I think will do pretty much everything I want, without any gasoline at all. May have to save up a bit first. The PHEV is perfect for right now in this moment, but within a couple years, it should be no problem to be full EV. And hopefully my house will be solar by then too, and my garage will also be and support a charging station for at least two cars.

Depending on your timeframe you might really want to think about the F150 lightning. Range is 300 in the extended range version (est'd) and it can power your house with the right configuration. It's a big reason why I didn't ultimately go with a battery backup for our solar system since I think cars will be the battery backups of the near future. Not sure if a Tesla can do that, they don't seem to advertise it so . But the Lightning probably realistically won't be available for a few years IMO (there will be ones but like the early days of the Model 3 all of those will be for those people who preordered)
