New car thoughts. EDIT: I ORDERED A TESLA MODEL Y.

This is the best test drive/review video I have seen so far and comports with what I experienced on my test drive. this German guy who is used to driving AMG‘s, RS’s, and M series he’s pretty impressed except his main complaint is that the suspension is not quite as nice as those aforementioned cars. In terms of being very settled at high speed. Not sure that will be an issue for me, but if it is, there are some aftermarket things he can do to the suspension to make it even nicer. But I really wasn’t looking to purchase it to have some sort of autobahn car. The sporty drivability is more of just an added benefit.

which model Y did you get??
standard
long range
AWD
performance AWD
???

You're going to love it. That's the blue that my brother's model 3 is and it looks damn good especially with the dark tinted windows.
Oh, and have fun making fart sounds in the passenger seats. It can do that.

I have ordered the MYLR (Model Y, Long Range), they are AWD. The acceleration and all that is such that giving up 30 or so miles of range for even more acceleration is really not worth it. And I got the standard 19" wheels as the ride can be stiff, especially with that on the MY P (performance), you can go up to 21. It is a coil spring suspension, and for a lot of people feels stiff. I like stiff, and did not feel anything I did not like on my test drive, partially over some rough highway in/near SLC. And the handling felt great. You can upgrade the suspension if you want with some aftermarket stuff with adjustable coil over upgrades with dampeners. I might do that if I find I want to. There is a rumor that the adjustable on the fly air suspension that comes on the S might become available for the Y, and it is already set up to add that on if it does happen. So might also wait and see if that comes around. Car isn't set to be delivered until June at this point. The Giga Press castings are coming online too, which stiffens the chassis even more. The German guy who did the test drive of a more recent car with that upgrade felt it was an improvement over the prior Y he had driven, that was also good, but more flexible feeling.

I also had them add on the hitch receiver. I did Black interior. (what me? White interior? are you (generally, not you) insane?). and as said, the standard 19 inch wheels and tires. All the rest of everything is standard.

My family will hate me. But I will do it anyway.

It also now supports my Tidal streaming service in the latest software upgrade, so that is cool!

I would like almost all of that except the black interior....gets way too hot in the summer. Course it probably has one of them fancy turn on the AC before you get to the car features

They have full cabin control. You can set a high and low point and a time and it will have the cabin exactly where you want it when you get in.

An EV out here in the middle of nowhere seems a bit impractical yet. Not enough infrastructure. But a plug in hybrid that can work on e-mode around town would take care of the lion's share of my driving, Probably 80-90% of it, and be more practical for road trips across the nothing lands for the rest of the driving.

So thinking Prius Prime. And it seems like just getting in line for a new one in the trim level I want is the way to go based on the used market and how those are just about as much right now, and considering financing. Was thinking XLE level for leather seats.

What am I missing?
We Have a 2020 Model 3 and picked up our new Model 3 yesterday. Send text and I'll give you my thoughts. I will say once you get used to driving a Tesla, its hard to drive anything else.

I have a VIN assigned and should have the car in a week or two. I have the outlet installed in the garage to charge. Don’t have solar yet, but will get that soon. Will enjoy not paying for diesel, nor burning it in my truck for just regular driving stuff.
Make sure you have you home charger installed before you pickup the car.

I don't know enough about them but how do they handle bad weather? The worst people have to drive here on a regular basis is rain. You guys have snow and ice and whatnot.

General rule of thumb in the midwest… all wheel drive (or at least limited slip rear drive) is better than front or rear “one wheel drive”.

Type of tires is also incredibly important. All wheel drive with summer tires probably won’t do as well as M&S or Winter rated tires on rear drive limited slip.

In the past, I would put different rims on a car (same size or slightly larger) then put summer tires on those rims, keep winter tires on the stock rims. Now that factory rims are getting nicer, I may reverse that and put winter tires on affordable rims and good summer tires on whatever large factory rims are available so they don’t ever see salt.

Something along those lines is likely my plan.
