Let's talk street racing and millennials

It's a big problem where I live. There is a stretch of a main road near my house that has relatively light traffic in the night hours that are frequently used by the street racers for their antics. It sounds like a freakin' race track out there on Friday and Saturday nights. You hear everything from rice rockets to muscle cars and motorcycles giving it full beans all night long. We've had quite a few fatalities too, and sometimes it's just some innocent bystander that gets creamed by one of these assholes.

I'm a gearhead, and I love high performance automobiles, but I'm with @Tiltsta , that it is getting far too easy for under-skilled drivers to get their hands on cars that have the kind of power you only used to find on the race track.

There were several coordinated street takeovers this past weekend and a couple of them turned into shootings

This one, multiple people were shot and one poor kid died, left at a gas station while someone was transporting him to a hospital

edit apparently an old guy in the white van was trying to get past the blockade and someone started swinging a bat at the van. The van then backs up, hits a car and speeds through while more than one person start shooting at the van. Participants/observers of the street takeover were shot inadvertently by the guys shooting at the van.

Millennials are 40 years old bro. We're not street racing. We're perfecting the Tetris of road trip minivan packing with a young family.

Street racing is stupid. There are so many much safer, and possibly much more affordable ways to get into motorracing if that's your thing. Rental supercarts for instance, there's fun for days right there.

I never thought I'd be like that, but here I am in my late 40s and I must confess I'm a bit of a petrolhead and drive a performance-ish car of a certain German brand often associated with assholes, mostly for leisure. But to me driving is all about being smooth, gentle and coolheaded and making the ride pleasant and safe for myself and certainly for any passengers and everyone else out there. There's plenty of challenge in that, especially on small windy roads in the countryside. On public road you don't gain many seconds by taking stupid risks anyway, if any at all.

I suppose age and the fact that I've witnessed serious car accidents a few times, one incident involving kids, put things into perspective. But I do get it, I think, and I was young too once and participated in high-risk behavior and breaking the rules, so I shan't pretend I'm a saint, but like I said, you can do loads of stupid things safely and have just as much fun.

Cops won't go anywhere near these crowds

so it seems it's time for a National gaurd lockdown ...curfew, etc. Also we have drones, night vision, all ,kinds of tech. Why can't we use cameras at intersections and know hot spots and then just start sending out tickets and when need be warrants for arrest. They used to target gang members, they can identify gang graffitti tagging so why can't they identify "big cheese" "racers" and "donut makers" go arrest them bright and early in the morning.

Gen Z....I don't think I was aware of the term Gen Z at the time of my OP so from here forward it is the Gen Z :cop:

coincidently this just happened in Tucson the other day (video in link) they speak of masked men with guns telling people they couldn't go through

“According to residents, one officer showed up in a marked vehicle with the lights off, but left shortly after.”

sounds familiar
I mean you gotta hand it to the one officer who had the right heart but then his better judgment took hold and he thought "yeah not much i can" i really think they need to send the gaurd in or how about the fucking SWAT team...shit let's see how tough the crowd is when the SWAT rolls the armored tank in with highly trained snipers etc

I'd say we nuke the highways from orbit.

I'd just toss a bunch of spike strips out on each egress from the event.
March a bunch of cops in and as they start to flee, they'll block themselves in.
Roll in the tow trucks and impound all the cars.

That's a good idea too! They used to have that law I believe where if your property was used in a drug crime it was seized. I remember we used to do work on some of the detective cars and they used seized drug cars .
That would get their attention more than any fine or jail time. just seize their car and revoke their license. if they are caught driving after that then automatic 4 year prison sentence. *edit* this would apply to spectators as well since lots of the 'racers" aren't even licensed let alone have insurance or are registered.

4 year sentence for driving without a license is a bit much considering our jails and prisons are already way overcrowded. I would suggest just continuing to fine them with automatic deduction. If they don't keep money in an account and don't pay then remove any government issued support if they collect that. Garnish wages, whatever. It would certainly get their attention eventually.

I guess what I meant was that would be a second offense if they already had their license suspended and if not well tuff cookies. I would tar and feather them if it were still an option

A man a few years ago got a fine for 1.08 million CHF, which is about 1.1 million US.

I like how you told us the value in CHF, and the also told us the value in dollars, which is only 2% different, and the qualified it with “about”

I will strive to provide you with less information and context in the future. I'm used to typing currency codes and conversions a billion times a year at work, and habits are hard to shake.

nearly-200-arrested-last-weekend-illegal-street-racing-sting

TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - Tucson police took nearly 200 people into custody last weekend in connection with two large-scale street races.

Officers said 124 adults and 53 juveniles were arrested between Friday, Sept. 9 and Sunday, Sept. 11. Five guns were also recovered during the sting.

In addition to traffic citations, police charged drivers and spectators with trespassing, a class 1 misdemeanor. Nine vehicles were also impounded.

I'm 51 and have never met a person who was into street racing. I thought it was some bullshit from Grease and old movies where you raced for pink slips. I had no idea it was a thing. I guess when you grow up and live in a place where bumper to bumper traffic is basically a 24x7 thing, you can't race
