Lady Gaga at the Oscars

Yup. She really is an amazing talent, and since she's recently moved away from the shock value stuff, it has really shone through with her jazz standards album with Tony Bennett, and now this. While I'm sure she'll return every now and again to the pop stuff, I think the direction of her career in the last year or so is about the best thing she could have done.

She sounds a lot better than she did when I saw her at MSG. But she wasn’t dancing in an outfit she was stitched into at the Oscars.

I like her.

She should have done that performance in a meat dress, though.

Have you considered the possibility that maybe, just maybe, Lady Gaga doesn't actually look like that blonde lady you see singing there, and that she is in fact wearing some sort of human skin outfit? Well? Have you?

Maybe she ACTUALLY looks like meat in real life.

Did any of you all catch his performance? She was outstanding. I've been saying for years that she's an amazing talent hopefully more people will realize that

I personally agree. I don't listen to her stuff much but enjoy seeing her performances. And last night was no exception.

Shirley you can't be serious?

Umm, meat dress.

Shall I continue?

There's plenty more, but that alone makes her over qualified for the position.

Seems like an overly harsh reaction, IMO. I'm not a fan of her music, but the meat dress and all her other costumes are just show biz. To me, it's no different than Elton John's outfits and glasses, Alice Cooper's eye make up, name and guillotine act, KISS' make up, Boy George, Marilyn Manson's look, etc. . . .

Do you feel the same way about all performers who do outrageous things as part of their act?

No.

Some (most) of the acts you mentioned were pioneers in that regard and for the most part get a pass based on originality.

I've known Alice Cooper since I was 4 years old. Lovely guy. I find his shtick to be pretty lame.

Elton John is a fucking brilliant musician on a level that simply can't be compared to Lady Gaga. She has a lot of talent and ability, but her shtick is just rehashed Madonna narcissism.

Marilyn Manson can choke on a bag of dicks. His music is shit, his act is shit, and from personal experience, he is shit.

Kiss was original. They still suck. If not for their shtick, they'd have been forgotten in the 70's.

Gaga clearly has the goods to be a viable commercial success without all of her ridiculous eccentricity. I'm all for artists using the quality of their work rather than the debased side show circus freak persona to succeed.

Live by the sword, die by the sword. It's too late for her. You can't put the Genie back in the bottle. She made her name by using theatrical, attention whoreish means. That should remain her legacy.

Plenty of wildly talented and successful acts out there who don't lean on gimmicks in order to sell records or concert tickets. When Jason Mraz was playing the local coffee houses on his nights off from delivering pizzas, he didn't resort to wearing clown shoes and a zoot suit with a neon motorcycle helmet to get noticed. He put his nose to the grindstone and honed his craft to a point where success was the only possible outcome. I love that kid. He inspires me endlessly, and is as genuine as anyone in the business.

So, harsh?

Maybe.

So be it. There are too many fabulous artists out there for me to give my time to, that don't go for the cheap attention grabbing Sideshow Bob bullshit.

I can live with harsh.

I always saw her as the Marilyn Manson of bubblegum pop. Lots of shock value but once you get past that... meh. She's Britney Spears in a meat dress.

Certainly no misogyny in my criticisms.

As for the rest, it's all a matter of opinion. One man's ridiculous is another man's truth. Personally, I think dressing up as a side of beef for artistic purposes is ridiculous. More so when it only detracts from the artists actual talent an ability. There's a good chance I would be able to objectively enjoy her work had it not been completely overshadowed (until suddenly... now) by gimmickry. That ship sailed many years ago. I can't be bothered now that she's decided to finally lean on her merits as a performer than on a cheesy, unoriginal caricature.

When Kiss stripped off all of their make up in the 80's, I didn't magically start liking their sophomoric tripe either. You can pull the veil away from a turd and it remains a turd.

Gaga didn't just suddenly become more talented, she simply put away the crutches and started walking on her own. Better late than never, but the cynic in me can't help put find a certain amount of cowardice waiting until after you've made gazillions of dollars as a fictional character to finally show your true colors. Hard for me to respect that.

Just opinion though. She doesn't need my support or approval. She's doing just fine without it.

She has some talent, clearly. I think though that she now realizes her dance music days are coming to a close and will try anything to stay in the news.
