Joe Satriani... I don't get it....

One of my students started learning that. That's a snoozefest for me.

What?!?!?! Didn't know you could play that

I'm teaching that to a student right now. He's not up to speed but he's pretty close. I can play most of it up to speed but I've never bothered working the whole thing up. probably will have it when my student finished the song though.

That's one of those things that YOU might not think is too cool, but I guarantee CHICKS will think it's cool.....

So, since we were on the subject, I just watched this video of Eric Johnson doing "Cliffs" way back in 88. I never paid much attention to any of these guys, and I've heard that song a gazillion times. I actually was quite shocked by this video. Not only does it kick all kinds of ass, but I noticed something that gave me some hope as a player...

The faster he plays, the less he uses his pinky. In fact, when he is going full tilt boogie, he doesn't use it at all. Doesn't this contradict the strict "Shredder Code"? I mean, would that not be considered a fundamental failure in terms of proper technique?

I know my real heroes (Gilmour, Clapton, etc...) are the same way, but they aren't shredders, so it's ok.

So, watch this, and school me. Am I understanding this correctly?

I can't play it even close to tempo, but my student plays everything way too fast, so it comes out sloppy. I've been trying for months to get him to clean up his technique, but he insists on ignoring his pinky plays almost everything with hammer-ons and pull-offs. He's very talented, but won't work at it at all. :(

Maybe that will be the next style. :embarrassed:

And comments like THAT is why I find you to be a bitter, nasty, narcissistic old man.

wow.

look man, chicks don't dig Cliffs of Dover. spending dozens of hours in your room perfecting it isn't going to get them to like you any more than some dude doing his best Kurt Cobain impression. it'll impress the hell out of us guitar dorks, but chicks just don't care. that's how it is. you don't have to like it.

I really question whether you know enough chicks to say what "CHICKS" in general like.

This thread is about Satch and Vai and all things winker-dinker shredder guitar wankery.

Let's try to keep it that way.

As for the pinky-gets-used-less as the song goes on, OGG, very astute of you. I wouldn't have noticed that if you hadn't pointed it out.

But you're right.

Wonder if I do the same thing? (Of course, I cannot play Cliffs of Dover, nor would I want to....one of those songs that is his, let him keep it type of thing.) Interesting observation, though.....

i dunno. maybe everybody, even Eric Johnson, goes on autopilot and tries to do their best Clapton when shit gets difficult.

Maybe, I just don't follow much shred type stuff, but it seems that the guys who are generally cited as being technically proficient use their pinkies like crazy... Something I could never do (because I suck). So, I was surprised to see such a highly regarded player as EJ going the Clapton route.

if you actually knew anything about me, you'd know all of my humor is self depreciating. chicks don't dig that music, music dorks like me do. so i dunno what you're reading into anything other than your own insecurities.

"we might be human, but we're still animals."

Cool

I just figured some of you guys who can actually play, and know what you're talking about (unlike yours truly) would school me on what is technically accurate and what is not. My overwhelming sense here is that EJ is a phenomenal "Feel" player that walks a fine line between Gilmouresque melodic smoothness and GIT Grad technician.

Obviously, I am way off base.

Back to the discussion at hand......

I really don't know of anything other than "Cliffs of Dover" that EJ has ever done, to be honest.

Anyone bother to listen to the "Frank" cut by Vai? I'd be curious to hear what you think of that one.....

i'm a terrible technician but i get where he's going with things. one of my friends is an absolutely phenomenal musician and he broke down some of Johnson's playing (i forget the song) to show me that the solo was all pentatonic, but because of his picking technique and note choice, it sounds nothing like it. pentatonics from Neptune.
