Interesting how many guitarist still hate on PRS guitars...

I don’t hate PRS. PRS just makes me feel sad.

Some midlife crisis guys get it up with Viagra and hideous convertible Corvettes. It’s all the same. Those cars don’t fuck either.

Midlife crisis viagra in a convertible Corvette just screams "Murphy Labs Les Paul" to me. :helper:

I like 'em because they consistently turn our very playable instruments, across the price ranges they cover.

My S2 McCarty 594 Thinline is fantastic, you shoulda heard me wailing on it last night.

It goes without saying that guitars are a very personal choice, and the superficial stuff isn't going to appeal to everybody. Even I, an unapologetic bird fan, would not be seen with any of the fancier, conspicuously expensive ones.

When I splurged on my old man guitar I bought a White Falcon. Its too much bling & totally impractical, but the quality is top notch and it sounds wonderful.
Same thing just different I guess.

If you learn anything from GPOTD threads or general guitar discussion online, aesthetic preferences are a massive factor in the guitars we like or dislike.

It's a highly subjective thing and PRS, in general, has a certain aesthetic thing that folks either embrace or reject.

I will add that I was actually looking at PRS guitars laying in bed last night. The ones with the big marshmallow turner knobs I simply cannot tolerate. Those white knobs don’t look classy or special or quality. They are just awful.

That's so weird... I seriously cannot think of what PRS had a V neck... A Vernon Reid Vela maybe?

There used to be two different depths and two different widths that would combine to make Standard, Wide Thin, Wide Fat... and then the DGT was it's own carve to Grissom's specs... more strat like than the WideFat but more depth than the standard.

Now it seems that there are many more signature carves... and then the S2 and SE variations of those carves.... there's probaby 15-20 different neck carves now. My 594 is beefier than any of the WideFats I've owned, but it might be a smidge narrower and the shorter scale length makes it very slinky and easy to play.

Every brand has their pros and cons.... I'm not down with some of the crazy tops and matching price tags on some of the core models... but PRS definitely has consistent, repeatable quality, stays in tune better than most other makes out there (honestly even some of my floyds can be a little more fidgety than some of my PRS) and they hold their value.

I get the looks/vibe thing.... I keep trying to move away from the PRS stuff because I like the vibe of some other instruments, but then I run into some of the other issues mentioned above and come crawling back to Paul like I'm a teen that wrecked his car. "Sorry Paul... you were right... I know you need to chaperone my next gig now.." :embarrassed: :helper:

It was a long time ago when that happened and I never revisited it. Come to think of it, never even tried to revisit. I am satisfied with my current options and if I am to spend that kind of money, I'll get another Kauer.

Knobs are one of the first things I change on most guitars when I get them.

I'm not really a big fan of the barrel tele knobs and I absolutely haaaaaaate "speed" knobs. More like "smooth round slippery can't turn when you're sweaty" knobs.

Love the faceted jem style knobs that PRS core guitars use and I put them on all of my PRS including the SE models. The transparency looks nice, but the edges along with the stratty bevel are perfect for your fingertip to settle on and roll.

I’ve played a bunch of them, I’m just not a fan of how they sound. Some of them do look nice to me, it’s really not the aesthetics at all (although I absolutely dislike the over the top blingy quilted/tiger stripe looking ones). Nice guitars for someone else, but not for me.

That's a fairly good point imo. Unlike a Tele, Les Paul, Strat and similar, PRS guitars don't really have a "sound" as far as I can tell. One example is watching Rush shows from a few years back (Rio, R30 and shows at that time). My fave sounds are when Lerxst bring out the Tele, Strat and LP. The PRS sounds fairly...generic to my taste.

You could say the PRS is the Gibson killer. A lot of the guys who would normally play LP's would pick up the PRS (Tim Pearce is a great example, and he's gone on record with it). Better tuning stability and basically the same sound. And it's pretty much all about design flaws and break angles - in Gibson's case, and that's why professionals just don't trust them. PRS guitars don't have those flaws.

I’ve seen that show too and remember thinking the same thing. PRS’ remind me a bit of Carvins tonally (I had a V220 I bought new in the late 80’s and gigged it along w/ my Strat for years), it was a great playing guitar but lacked and real personality from a tonal standpoint…kind of jack of all trades and master of none (had coil splits and a bunch of series/parallel switches). I sold it off finally in the early 2000’s, it was replaced as my go to humbucker guitar w/ a Les Paul Standard.

No, no, the new turner knobs. 6 big white marshmallows around the headstock.

They’re excellent guitars. They’re a little flashy maybe, but so were teles, strats, LPs and everything else in their day. More and more younger guys are playing them around the Boston scene. And it’s Rock N Roll. Flash goes a long way. I really wish I hadn’t sold my 08 DGT.

This about sums it up for me. On the very limited set of PRS guitars I’ve played, I just never fell in love with the pickups. Always felt like a really nice guitar with the electronics of a sorta nice guitar.
Maybe I should spend more time with them, prolly some out there that I’d really like.
