Gin Blossoms, 30+ years later...

I just watched a 'Professor Of Rock' video on the Gin Blossoms. He interviews the singer and 2nd guitarist.

What are your thoughts on them after all these years? Myself, I think their songs are catchy, even if they are from a genre I don't normally listen to. Do any of your bands play a song or two from them?

Excellent pop songs that channeled a very particular sort of melancholy. The band's backstory is just awful.

I dig them. They don't remind me of sweet poontang though.
They are from Tempe AZ. My late uncle's old town.

They were a big influence on the original bands I was a part of in the latter half of the '90s, along with TTWS, Wallflowers, Sheryl Crow, and Jellyfish.

I can recall two of their songs and forgot the rest. Were they one of the bands that broke out on MTV but moved into the adult contemporary VH1 scene?

I know them well. They used to come up to play bars in Flagstaff, AZ, late 80’s, when I was earning my Bachelor’s degree at NAU. They’d often end up at our rented house for after gig parties because one of my roommates was Mike Rhodes, brother of their drummer, Phil Rhodes. They were unsigned during that time.

I graduated from NAU nearly 2 years before they released their first major label album. I saw them play Red Rocks as an opening act during the 90’s.

A bit of soap opera, back story from the late 80’s. Doug Hopkin’s, the main song writer/guitarist (wrote the hits on that first album) used to date Cathy Swafford (the subject of some songs). She ended up dating my college roommate, Mike Rhodes (brother of the drummer). Mike and Cathy ended up getting married.

They remind me of my tour in Washington DC, therefore consequently on some poontang that I ploughed there.

But on a more serious note, that album was seriously good stuff that still holds up to today's listening for me.

They were the middle act in the 2022 BNL tour, w/ Toad opening...and they were great. Not as good as Toad (a favorite band of mine) or BNL, but they were tight and sounded like they did back in the day. I remember getting burned out on them rather quickly when their big album broke, but having not listened to them/those songs for literal decades they were a lot of fun.

Robin filled in for Pat DiNizio (RIP) when I saw the Smithereens back in Jan. Apparently he was a big fan of theirs. He did a great job.

I saw that tour, it was a great show - I enjoyed all 3 bands.

I checked out video clips. Robin's voice fits the band well.

I bought the "Green Thoughts" disc when it was released. I just about wore it out. I learned a few of the songs. But, I have not listened to it in a long time.

That's my favorite album of theirs. "Elaine" would get stuck in my head for weeks at a time.
