Question: Do you ROKU?

In your case the Roku would allow you to NOT have to connect the laptop. But as long as you don't mind doing that, then yeah you don't need a Roku.

Ok, so I realize the various interfaces and even the Kodi software are legal and just avenues to view streaming content you pay for. The add ons you can get with something like Kodi are providing content you don't pay for. So if free music downloads caused high ticket, cd, merch etc. prices what is the affect of free video content? From what I can tell providers are raising the price of providing internet service. So they are going to get your money one way or the other.
I have come to terms with paying for tv, which was difficult since I grew up when there was no cable. But I understand that I have a million more options to watch so I can deal with it. But when the costs creeps up to these levels it makes it difficult. And I know prices are based on what people will pay. Although I'm not a big stealing content guy, I was hoping that since so many people were, maybe it would make prices go down so I could enjoy the ease of using my regular Direct TV gear and a fair price.

I changed our TV the other night and just plugged the Roku right in without having powered it down or anything and it started behaving like a dick (not the green thing, but suddenly slowing down a LOT). Now I've got a good idea why (and how to fix it).

No problem! It took me a few hours of googling it to figure it out. I tried every solution that people had posted and nothing worked until I tried this.
Iirc, it seems to happen more frequently with certain brand tv's. The one it happens to for me is an Insignia. The Best Buy brand.

I can't help you there as I am using that complex Android box that I have not done anything to since maybe September of 2016. I just finished watching the first 4 episodes of season 7 of G ame of T hrones seamlessly.
SMART TVs and many Blu-Ray players are including a lot of apps that allow you to access these streaming services, including MLB, Netflix, NHL, news channels, etc.

ROKU is great. Been using one for several years now, well worth the price of the box. I have all of our DVD and Blu-ray library ripped to a 4TB External drive and use PLEX to stream all of that to the bedroom TV.
I did run into an issue with the hardware (2nd gen), where it was rebooting a lot and acting like an asshole. After all of the software and hard reset options failed to fix it, I decided my original suspicion of it being heat related was the culprit.
Sure enough... After reading several items about that exact issue, I basically turned the casing around the guts into Swiss cheese with a drill and have been problem free since. It looks fucked up, but it works like a champ.
