Question: Do you ROKU?

I rarely watch live TV aside from hockey season.

My wife watches news/oprah/hallmark/discovery id.

We have netflix and watch movies or tv series occasionally.

We've had dish network for years and want to dump it.

We have two TVs; living room and bedroom.

Thinking of getting Roku. I don't know much about it, it looks like it would let us order stuff on a per-channel basis, which would probably be good.

Anyone have any experience with Roku? Should look at something else?
 
I liked Roku.It was free with a prepaid 3 month ing membership.

I don't use it now because my roommate is a walking turd and can't come up with $20.00 a month for internet.

Roku works fine, but you have to pay for the apps you want to use, though some are free. I have netflix and Amazon, youtube and a few others I use regularly.

Just be careful or you can accidentally order redundant services from competing companies.
I audited my checking account after we started Roku and found a couple that I signed up for but didn't use and cut them off.
 
If you have high speed internet, the best thing out there to my knowledge is Kodi. You run it using an Android box, or a laptop (if it has tv connection such as HDMI) or Amazon fire stick (possibly other sticks?).

More than you could ever watch. It has been the great wide open of tv for a while now so I often wonder how long it will continue to be good because so many people are getting so much content for free.

lol - I appreciate the offer. We're looking at the current deal that gets you a free box w/a 2 month prepaid subscription to direct tv ($70), which you can cancel after that.

@smorgdonkey - is Kodi painless to use? Is there hardware available that's pretty much plug-and-play? I don't mind tech stuff, but my wife's tolerance for that kind of stuff when it comes to TV is pretty low.

There is plug and play in theory but I found that I had to do some techie stuff to get it to have the content up to snuff and the curve for using it can seem a little confusing.

For example:
-turn on Android box
There is a processor in there so it may take 20 seconds or so to be ready.
-select Kodi
-select video
-select 'channel' (ie: Ex odus)
-select TV show
-select Game of T hrones
-select which season
-select which episode
Total elapsed time to this point is only 15-20 seconds more (after you are used to using it)
and it usually takes 30 seconds more acquiring all of the streams from here.
-select a source and usually 5 seconds later you are watching.

It used to be great for new movies because someone would hijack a theatre screener from somewhere and you could watch hi def movies that were just hitting the theatres. Now they seem like they are not releasing those screeners anymore so for really new stuff it is often someone has recorded it with a camera or phone and put it online but older movies and TV shows Kodi is phenomenal.
 
I have both Roku and Kodi. Love Roku....simple to use but as stated you have to pay for the subscriptions etc. We have Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and CBS. Less than $40/month plus whatever the internet service is per month.
Kodi is great for all the content but it requires VERY regular updates and the sites used to stream content are often blocked....I find it a pain in he ass really. BUT, it's a one time purchase.

Have you used Ex odus? I have never had anything blocked using it though it was glitchy when it first came online for about 2 weeks. I just went to YouTube & found a video on how to add Fusion to Kodi and followed that. Golden from then on.

I have been using the Android box for close to two years now and I have upgraded the Kodi version once & all other updates are automatic (perhaps this is a configuration in settings...IDK).
 
I have an android on a stick, plugs right into the tv - I'm going to try kodi on it... but, the deed is done, directv for 2 months and a roku box have been ordered.
 
I will dump our satellite as soon as I figure out how to DVR my wife's network TV shows via an online service like Sling, Apple TV, or whatever. Other than those shows she watches, 99% of our TV viewing is Netflix or Amazon Prime.

My Kodi is on an Amazon firestick. One of the guys from work actually has it right now and he is updating the build for me. I know there was a previous build that was very glitchy...maybe that is what is currently installed.
My buddy says the new build works great on his firestick. Hopefully mine will work better as well.

I do have exodus....that was one of the streams I was having trouble with. I'm hoping the problem is just a shitty build version.

I was fighting with a Firestick all day.
Can't get it going.

It's mainly my fat fingers and small phone screen.
 
I got a roku about 5 years ago and something finally stopped working on it, might've just got real slow from being outdated but anyway i bought the basic cheap one earlier this year to replace it .....cost 25 dollars and it works just fine, does everything it should which is streams video. I imagine the more upper end ones are faster and have better pic quality, etc. I also have an Apple TV which is good if you have a mac because then you can stream your computer stuff, itunes, photos, etc in a very simple way the picture quality is better than the Roku but my Apple TV is the older version, I'll get another when this one craps out but honestly I only use the Roku right now.
I have Netflix and have for years but the only reason i keep it is for "stranger Things" otherwise I'd let it go because Amazon kicks it's ass every which way. With Amazon prime there are so many movie, tv, documentaries to choose from (if you like obscure weird stuff, B movies, old sci fi etc amazon is a gold mine). Amazon prime also has lots of "add on channels" which are right around 3-4 dollars a month....about the price of one movie rental. these channels are geared to certain interests and you get access to all that channels videos for example I subscribe to shout tv and Fandor
Roku and other services have lots of channels but all I've ever used them for is netflix, Amazon, Youtube and MLB baseball.

I don't miss cable one single bit other than EPL soccer but not enough to subscribe to an outdated mode of tv delivery (package deal vs ala carte) fuck cable in it's face.

The Exodus add-on is no longer supported and its streams are slowly dying out. The people who developed it are now doing the Covenant add-on.
