Do you miss physical media?

Rip off? Technically.... no.

It was a process... that you got your collection and then they would send you a card every month. You were required to buy a certain number within a year, which wasn't unreasonable or unreasonably priced. (when factored against the 13 or 18 or whatever you were originally sent for $0.01

HOWEVER....

If you were late with marking "nothing at this time", or getting your real selections in, they would send you the "record of the month" which was based on your original musical choices or genres. Sometimes these were great... sometimes they were shit. Returning the ones you didn't want was a pain in the ass. CANCELLING after you've fulfilled your membership minimums was akin to cancelling a gym membership today. :annoyed:

Needless to say, there were many records or CDs exchanged at second hand music places for pennies on the dollar that people received because they sent their cards in a day late or someone fucked up.

So your experience completely hinged on how many times you shot yourself in the foot or let them fuck you in the ass. :helper:
I see you didn’t know the trick. All you had to do was not fill in the card and wait for the CD. Once you got it, you didn’t open it, you just wrote “return to sender” on the package and dumped it in the mail. After 3 or 4 of those they canceled you.

I do and I don’t.
I prefer to purchase physical media, especially right from the artist when possible.
I tend to be lazy about actually loading it up and listening to it.
At the same time, I don’t stream very much. My wife streams the local radio station through the smart devices around the house. Which is weird, but it’s an easy way to get a whole-house sound system.

I still like to buy physical media or at least digital files. When you rent music, “they” can alway decide to change the price or even take things out of circulation. I have albums and CDs that are no longer in print, no longer on any streaming service, or that have been replaced with new remixed versions.

I still love physical media. For me, the things that I miss most are magazines. The big full racks of magazines are what I miss the most. I used to get a bodybuilding magazine, a motorcycle magazine, a couple of guitar magazines...

No, I don't miss physical media because, I still use it. Using Spotify, etc., sounds like something a hipster would do.
Actually hipsters love irony and appropriation and therefore hipsters love physical medium such as film cameras, cassette tapes and vinyl BECAUSE it is not the status quo of the masses which is in music media the cloud stream.
It’s only a matter of time before hipsters declare Netflix as boomer trash and start buying VHS.
TLDR….hipsters Love them some vinyl and cassette

I don't miss physical media. It's still around

I quite often buy cd's, pretty much all second hand though. Cassettes sucked anyway, so I'm glad to see them go. And there's several good vinyl stores around with nice stuff.

And for daily listening I use soundcloud and bandcamp, cause spotify can stuff a volcano up its ass in hell.

I also purchase some movies in BR or UHD-BR.

I still subscribe a handful of magazines/quarterlies in print.

And almost all of my books are in print, if that counts.

I miss printed books. I've weaned myself off of them to reduce clutter. But I do miss them.

I’m getting excited for record store day on April 20.
Lots of special releases, limited edition stuff.
Pushes all of my buttons.

I like having something in case my hard drive crashes, but the jewel cases I need to throw away and a few years ago I literally bought my wife the last model HP laptop with an actual disc drive. So I know it's on its way out.

I really don’t miss physical books at all…I used to have OCD about the binding all the time and it really irritated me when the binding fell apart as they always did. Besides that I like digital books better if for no other reason you can adjust the size of text and with old eyes that is a huge plus. Also no desire to have tons of books cluttering the walls

What are you complaining about? Vinyl is more popular than ever as are books. Plus now you have the additional option of digital versions as well.

I’m guessing vinyl is not more popular now than it was in say 1974

Print media is definitely not more popular than is once was. Magazines are almost non existent and there is no zine scene like in the 80s or 90s
