Concerts - Favorite of 2016 and Looking Forward To 2017

Yeah, the wife and I were super upset to miss the TWS and BTHM tour. Glen Phillips is one of my favorite singer songwriters and Toad is just a great band...not a bad album in their catalog (for me anyway). Another concert season hits me with so many wants, but with so little available cash. When I'm flush, the pickings are slim...when the wallet is slim the options are mouth watering.

I hear ya. With us buying a house, I've had to skip a bunch of shows I normally wouldn't miss.

I should've bought tickets for the Iron Maiden show. I haven't seen them since 1985 and the Powerslave tour :(

Oh well, maybe next time....

In two weeks I'll be seeing Fates Warning though :)

So Elvis opened with a cover of Little Feat's "On Your Way Down." I sure as hell didn't see that coming but it was a welcome surprise. Great show all around.

A strat. I has disappoint

The Strat was strictly for "Everyday I Write the Book" and maybe one other song.

Most of the night he was either on a red Epiphone Casino or what looked like a black-to-antigua burst Jazzmaster, but he also used a goldtop P90 LP, a Tele, a big Gibson jazzbox of some kind, and what looked like either a Collings or a Gibson parlor guitar. I occasionally forget he's a perfectly decent guitarist. No great shakes, but certainly more than competent.

EDIT: Found a picture of the antigua burst Jazzmaster:

Elvis looking better these days. A few years ago he was carrying an extra 50 pounds or more and did not look good.

Despite all the great players that have played, there is no other player in whose hands the Jazzmaster looks more correct.

Now that's Elvis. I bet there are many folks here dying inside about that guitar. Antigua + Tort

Maybe, but nobody gets more out of them than this man.

No doubt, but it still doesn't look as right in his hands...to me. Nils makes it look toy-ish...look at the size of his hands! Nils is an instrument as a tool guy and he would and does get great things out of any guitar. So when I see him with a hollowbody or another electric, I'm good with it...expect it even as he tries for more and different sounds. Elvis is the guy that I associate the JM with and the one I expect to see playing it. That picture of him with the Strat is strange as would be one with the Casino. A few years ago they were regularly showing a concert from when he was carrying the extra weight and he played a big old jazz box and I think a Tele at one point and they just looked wrong...like Albert King not playing a V. I know it happens, but still.

Okay, I've never seen Albert without a V...

Elvis is a righteous axeman. Nels even more so.

Yes, and don't take this the wrong way, but Elvis' guitaring skills are decent at best.

There is a reason that he doesn't play Alison true to the recording. I believe he simply cannot pull it off convincingly so he doesn't try. That part was played by John Mcfee of Clover (the backing band on My Aim is True). There is as far as I know only one live version of that song true to the album.

I love his songwriting, and his playing usually fits the song well, but a guitar god he is not.

Not a fan of Antiguas or JMs, but I sort of like that (except for the inlay).

Well, since Soundgarden didn't work out for me, I went ahead and sprang for Boz Scaggs tickets on Monday .... because with his contemporaries like Gregg Allman passing away, my buddy and I would like to see Boz one more time before he goes.

Also Michael McDonald will be there, unless he keeps forgettin' where the concert venue is.

I haven't even looked at what's coming up here in Denver.
Live shows are more of a PITA then they are worth.
*Edit* I just checked Red Rocks schedule. There are some interesting shows coming up.
Big Head Todd on Saturday would be great. I know I can't make it.
