Concerts - Favorite of 2016 and Looking Forward To 2017

I got an actual seat. I think I have a few friends going who got lawn, so I will probably hang back with them for the opener and probably some of Wilco. But I also want to be able to see some of the show, so I got a seat. I'm in R Orchestra DD. You thinking about heading up for it? That'd be cool.

@Chad , tell me about Wolftrap. Sounds interesting.

Its pretty funny. Wolftrap is in Vienna, where I grew up. I used to ride my bike to some parks next to it when I was a kid, but I only went to a show there for the first time about 2 summers ago. When I was younger, it was a venue that only had bands for "old" people  Now I am one of those old people. It is a really cool place, it is an outdoor venue, but the stage and some seating in like a theater, but there are plenty of lawn "seats." It really is a great venue, the sound is really good and it isn't a pain in the ass to get to or get out of. Here is a pretty good pic of the venue. They have a bunch of symphony shows and older rock acts. They do some pretty cool things where they show musicals but have an orchestra there playing the soundtrack. I really should go there more often.

Looks like November will be quite awesome. First the Purple show and then going to Lithuania to see Queen/Lambert.
Never seen either live before so that should be very cool.

Social Distortion just announced Aug 13 at the Fillmore. I will be there.

Possibly the Old97s at the Birchmere.

Just saw Flaming Lips last night. This is a good homemade video of the same tour. Captures some of the psychedelia.

Tonight is Tom Paxton at the Iron Horse. Tom had a fall in the Subway a couple months ago that broke his Martin; luckily that was all that was damaged. He is turning 80 this year, so falls can be more damaging. Luckily all is well and the show is still on!

Tonight is an Elvis Tribute show. The Way It Was.
Tomorrow is Tommy Emmanuel and Andy McKee.

Later in June, same Elvis dude but different show. Aloha. Done just like the original satellite broadcast but in a 5000 seat arena.
My wife likes Elvis and this guy is really good. So, I actually enjoy it, too.

I've got tickets for Brian Setzer at the end of June.
Artpark is not my favourite venue, but it's reserved seats. So, I'll try to cope.
My brother in law wanted to see Randy Bachman and the only way he could get tickets was to buy a season pass. So, he's giving me the Brian Setzer tickets.

I went to see Preoccupations (formerly known as Viet Cong) last weekend. Really good show. Amazing rhythm section.
Going to check out The Orwells today. We're doing sound for them at Wesleyan University's spring fling.
Others that I'm interested in, but haven't pulled the trigger on:
Land of Talk @ The Bowery Ballroom
New Pornographers/Cloud Nothings @ College St. Music Hall (really just interested in Cloud Nothings, but don't want to pay $30 just to see them play for a 30 minute opening set).
Wilco's Solid Sound Festival @ Mass MOCA
Social Distortion @ College St.

I so wanted to go to Solid Sound this year, but with buying the house in a few weeks, its not in the cards this summer. I guess I'll have to wait until '19 but I will see them in June at Wolf Trap.

It looks like a really cool festival. I haven't convinced any of my friends to go yet. Or rather, none of my friends have convinced their wives yet. We'll see.

I gotta a buddy who wants to go, but he is so flaky, its hard to make any plans with him.

Wow, Tom Paxton did quite a show last night. He had two guys, the Don Juans, as his backup; they were great as an "opening act" and really added to Tom's set. You would not have thought that Paxton is 79; he had plenty of energy, his voice is strong, and he did a lot of material from his last two albums, even though he has "hits" from back as far as 1963. This was far from a nostalgia show, though, to me, the highlight was when he sang The Last Thing on my Mind. That is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard; live with harmonies from the band was like heaven. Boy am I glad I went.

Well, the Metallica concert was great fun...big, loud, drunken singalong stuff. BUT, Lars is getting really sloppy.

Like really, really sloppy.

I went and saw the band Avatar (the one from Sweden) last night, mainly because I had the night off, nothing better to do, and tickets were only $15. Didn't hurt that the show was local, in Battle Creek, and I didn't have to drive to Detroit/Chicago/Grand Rapids.

I went to the concert not really knowing much about them other than youtubing a couple of their videos. They put on an excellent stage show, fwiw. The band dresses up in what looks like old circus stagemaster costumes...the short waistcoat with the double row of buttons - kinda like Napoleonic cavalry uniforms, the white pants, etc and they wear makeup that gives them a mime/clown/black metal corpse paint scheme vibe.

Music was ok, very competently played, my biggest grip was that every song was in 'E'...well, they downtune to something like C or D-flat, but you get the picture. They have a mishmash of metal genres...nu metal, melo-death metal, maybe a bit of groove metal, a touch of symphonic and prog metal.

Anyways, I had a good time. I thought I would run into a couple of friends there but I didn't see them.

As a side note, I could've played last night as in one of the local opening bands. My friend that I jam with on New Years Eve every year, his band was supposed to be one of the openers, but I guess their lead guitarist is ill. My friend sent me a PM on facebook last Friday asking me to show up Saturday for practice and fill in so they could do the gig.

I have never, ever, played with his band before, and in their half-hour set they usually do a mix of three '90s nu-metal/rock songs that while I know the songs, I've never attempted them, and three originals. There is no way in hell that with just one practice I would've been comfortable with playing those songs. It would've been a trainwreck on my part, to say the least.

Maybe if I was as skilled as @Mark Wein or @micwalt I could've pulled it off, but I'm not. Not even close, as you guys that have been to pragestock know after hearing me play.
