Question: Classic Rock spinoff thread #1 - what bands are you most tired of?

Didn't seem to do much good, as the rotation on my local classic rock station has moved from the 60s to the 70s and 80s and the song list gets narrower every damn day. I swear, they play AC/DC every friggin hour. :mad:

They can do what they like. I only turn that station on nowdays on Sunday nights for the Sunday Night Blues Cruise. :thu:

That said, in our area the Harder Rock bands have worn out their "hit songs" faster IMO that even the same, tired Boston, Foreigner, Brian Johnson-era AC/DC and so on that gets played into the ground. Seriously anything post Black Album by Metallica, Korn, Creed, Slipknot, and probably a dozen other bands that I lump into one indefiniable mush of growling and thrashing guitars.... those things usually have me turning the radio to NPR or Off.

I'd rather listen to wind and tire noise than "whiskey in the jar-o". :annoyed:

They're more blued-influenced than country. Their biggest hits tend to be more on the country-ish side, but that's not representative of their overall sound IMO. You don't like Allman Bros, Molly Hatchet, The Outlaws, or ZZ Top, either?
 
I don't listen to classic rock radio much at all. Even when I'm bored and flip the station to them I don't last long because it is the same songs. So avoiding the radio does help the irritation level a bit.

Skynyard has enough good songs that are rarely on the radio (Curtis Lowe, Simple Man, The Breeze, etc) that I still enjoy listening to them. I am pretty sick on some of the Eagles songs. Especially the Don Henley written ones. Over played and a bit too smug. Pink Floyd too.....

This is almost funny. I just looked at the 'just played' listing from the two main classic rock stations in town and they both played the exact same song in the last hour.

Here is the 'list' from one of them

ZZ Top is the only one of the bands listed that I listen to. Anything pre-Eliminator (IE, anything pre-drum machine).

Their version (theirs is still a cover as well, right? an Irish folk song?) is so superior to the Metallica version, it's not even funny.


I forgot, the Metallica cover I hate even moreso is Turn-the-fucking-Page. :gah:

I am fortunate that I don't get overexposure here too much also. though the local "classic" does have its bad days, it is independent, and throws in a variety of stuff ranging from Porcupine Trees to REM and other more contemporary adult stuff. I do get tired of them playing "Tree Top Rider" though. they seem to get stuck on that one.
 
Luckily, some of the best/my favorite songs never get radio play.
I'm talking about Beatles, Hendrix, Rush, The Who and Led Zeppelin, in particular. I can't stand listening to the over-played songs from these groups, but dig deeper into the albums and you'll find the best gems.

I can't say the same for AC/DC or Skynryrd.

Thin Lizzy was a great band. it's really too bad they've been reduced to "The Boys are Back in Town". but that's for the other thread.

I've only run one karaoke gig in 2011... but in 2010 when I had a fairly regular string, I would basically tell people "no.... pick something else" when they would turn in either version. I'm sorry... I work hard at entertaining this entire bar... I'm not having you come in here, shit all over this shitty song, and basically depress everyone in a 5 mile radius. It's not happening. :annoyed: "

Have you listened to the Skynyrd albums? Their best stuff is not on the radio.

Technically not really a cover as it's an old Irish folk tune, and Thin Lizzy's version was radically different than how anyone else had done it at the time.
So more a re-writing than a cover imo. :wink:

I grew up listening to them as well as Molly Hatchet and 38 Special, among other Southern rock bands. One of my buddies was a huge fan of Skynyrd, and I had a several of their albums back then as well. I burned out on most Southern rock about 30 years ago.

My statement stands. Well, opinion, actually.

Music is an individual thing. I try not to step on other's tastes. Anyone who loves music is cool in my book. However, I despise those cork-sniffing elitests who are trying to hide their inferiority complexes with look-down-their-noses comments.
