Can't decide if this Richie Kotzen interview on Beato's channel...

baimun

Funkasaurus Rex
... makes me extremely happy or pisses me the fuck off.

He's such an amazing guitar player and fucking incredible singer... it just seems so effortless. It's not fucking fair. :helper:

Had look him up on wikipedia. Was in Mr. Big and Poison?

Gonna be real honest i am not a fan of either of those bands.

I loved Mr Big but didn't really listen when he was in it... I hated the first Poison lineup, so I never gave him a chance there....

... it wasn't until he was playing in the Winery dogs that I thought "How can his voice be THAT fucking good... AND he can shred like that?"

He was briefly the replacement guy in both of those bands. It afforded him a lot of touring experience and a pretty nice paycheck. He's mostly known (in rock guitar circles) as a solo artist and as a member of the Winery Dogs (with Mike Portnoy and Billy Sheehan) and Smith/Kotzen (with Adrian Smith of Iron Maiden). He's an incredible player and singer. I've been meaning to watch that interview.

Watched/listened to it yesterday...following up on his age, we share a birthday...he's two years older. Baimun, you're Feb 3rd too right?

I long ago looked at suck folks as inspirational/aspirational. With Richie it was from his first album Shrapnel album, cuz he had a feel/groove that was so much looser than all of the other shredders. More like EVH and Nuno and less like Yngwie and Satch. I will admit that once I heard him sing, I got a bit pissed at the unfair balance of ability.

The part that resonated hugely with me was when he talked about VH and learning a bit, figuring it out, but never learning all of the rest of something like Eruption. I live(d) there as a player...figuring someone wants to hear VH or any other guy, they should go listen to them. Copping their note selection, sound, and specific feel was never my goal, but I did aspire to gaining similar facility on the instrument. The latter never really panned out, but it's also long been clear to me that not everyone is capable of the same facility regardless of time/effort expended.

Long one of my favorite things he's done:

At about the 1:25 mark he brings his hand up to his head and you can see the size of his meathooks. There was an issue of one of the guitar mags in the late 80s/early 90s where they had Richie, Nuno, and Reb (maybe someone else as well) and the other guys were complaining about the size of his hands and the unfair advantage he had as a result.
